Dark skies, pouring rain; still, he made his way home - or at least that’s what it was called. Without his counterpart there, it wasn’t really a home. Just a hollow place where he could take shelter from the cruelties of the weather.
It was pointless to count the steps that brought him further from the hospital. He had not the strength to grit his teeth anymore, nor could he simply ball his hand into a fist to express any emotion. His salty tears mixed with the sky’s own. He looked up - grey skies and no more. Were the heavens mourning with him?
“How is he?” the sable-haired man asked, standing up from his chair.
After hearing the news from his band mate, he immediately rushed to the hospital. There he stayed, silently promising the other that he’ll stay until his precious would awaken.
The good doctor took of his glasses, a rather serious expression canvassed on his face. “It’s been more than 3 weeks. Why don’t you go home and rest? You can’t stay here for the rest of your life-“
“-I asked how he is. Tell me how he is!” He was being brash, he could tell. But this situation wasn’t one to be taken lightly. Who would be calm when your lover’s life was on the line?
“We did everything we can. But like I said, you can’t stay here for the rest of your life, waiting for him.”
He didn’t need any more explanations. It was obvious anyway. Doctors have a knack for letting out bad news in a rather calm manner. It’s really frustrating when they could always just let reality slap you in the face. But somehow, it was better this way. Somehow.
With his raven hair covering most of his face, he felt himself slump down to his knees. Something in him was crushed, that’s for sure. And he needn’t mention what it was. Pity was far from what he needed.
By the time he reached their apartment - which was just his now - he was drenched completely. The rain had made his tears indistinguishable. But his eyes had given away his earlier turmoil.
Pictures on the furniture had plunged him into more sorrow. Smiles, laughter and joy were printed for generations to last. Yet it didn’t help uplift his spirit at all. How could he manage to smile when the love his life was taken away?
“Look! Look!”
“You bought yourself a motorcycle and?” He was always cool and composed no matter what. It was amazing though that he was a softie with his counterpart.
“Could you be more excited? You know how much I wanted one!”
“Did you at least buy yourself a helmet? Do you have any idea how dangerous those things are?” And how he cared for the younger man. He was never like this with the rest of the band. Yes, they’d see him as a big brother, but that was rare.
“Yes, I did. You don’t have to worry so much about me-“
“-how can I when you’re always doing things that make me worry?”
Before a camera or an audience, they were the pair that made girls cheer. But behind the scenes when they were alone with each other, it was different. Each passing moment was genuine, and not something that was just called for by matter at hand.
“Promise me you won’t end up on your back because of the thing.”
The younger man nodded delightfully. “Even if I do, I promise that I’ll get back up!”
“You better...”
He discarded himself from his wet clothes and slipped into dry ones before collapsing on the bed - the bed that will be occupied by a single person now. The warmth of the spot next to him was long gone and it would never come back. Nothing was there to greet him as he shifted to his side. The sweet smile of the one he yearned for would never be seen again. He pulled the blanket over his body. It wasn’t as warm as it used to be. How could it be possible to feel such warmth when he was no longer with him?
He chose to lie on his back. He was just numb now. How was he to react anyway? Sorrow already hit him as he walked all the way back to the apartment. Anger? Well, he felt a tinge of it when the doctor had told him when they’ve ‘done all they could’. And shock was already done with when he finally got to grasp the reality of things. He closed his eyes, letting sleep take over him but not before a lone tear escapes from his eye.
He was gone. All that’s left was to get over him. But that wasn’t really possible. In his head, Aoi coudn’t forget the words Uruha told him.
“Even if I do, I promise that I’ll get back up!”
Where was that promise now?
