Summary : Jonghyun returns in the hopes of fulfilling his promise to Taemin. Did Taemin hold on to Jonghyun’s promise?
“Eomma” Taemin said to Kibum the next morning during breakfast, “do we have new neighbors?”
“Oh? I didn’t know that. Do we, yeobo?” Kibum passed the question to Jinki.
“Yeah, I think so. I saw an old lady with a little boy around Taemin’s age walking around and saw them entering the house beside ours.” Jinki replied.
“So it’s not Jonghyunnie-hyung?” Taemin said looking down his bowl of cereal. Kibum took a deep breath.
“Taeminnie,” Taemin was still looking down his food, “do you see Jonghyunnie-hyung as a big brother?” Kibum asked, feeling tense about the question he threw at Taemin. Taemin thought for a little while.
“I see Jonghyunnie-hyung” Taemin started while playing with his food “as eomma sees appa.” Kibum acted like he was fainting on his seat while Jinki choked on his coffee.
“Okay Taeminnie.” Kibum said after he and Jinki recovered. “But are you really sure about that?”
“I always see Jonghyunnie-hyung in my dreams, eomma. What do you think that means?”
“It means, he misses you as much as you miss him, baby.” Kibum said lovingly, adding. “Get ready for school now Taeminnie.”
Taemin nodded, got up and went to his room to get ready. Jinki wrapped his arms around Kibum, saying, “You said we’ll accept him no matter what, right yeobo?” Kibum sighed. Jinki laughed and kissed Kibum’s cheek, “You know what they say.. Like mother..”
“Like daughter..?” Kibum looked up at Jinki. “And like father like son. We’re both gay anyway, it doesn’t matter. Who are we not to accept it, right?” Jinki said insightfully. Kibum smiled and kissed Jinki on the lips.
“YAH!!!” Taemin exclaimed jokingly. “I’m right over here!” But he liked seeing his parents being sweet to each other. Jinki and Kibum laughed and went to drop Taemin off to school.

“Owwie.” Taemin was in the playground of the school trying the monkey bars. He fell down and landed on his face. It was his knee that got scratched though, and it was bleeding. Taemin stared at his knee and started crying. “Where is Jonghyunnie-hyung when I need him.” He said to himself.
It was usually Jonghyun who would tend his wounds when the need arose..with the help of Taeyeon’s first aid kit, of course. But now, Jonghyun was nowhere. His eomma and appa were at work. Taemin was alone, and hurting.
Taemin just sat there on the ground staring at his wound. He saw a shadow approaching him but he didn’t care. He was engrossed in his thoughts. The wound. Jonghyun’s and Taeyeon’s absence. The feeling of solitude. The shadow hovered on him but still he didn’t decide to look up.
“Are you hurt?” A voice said. Taemin thought it sounded familiar but he didn’t look up, he just nodded. A boy made his way towards Taemin’s hurt knee and looked at it. Taemin finally looked at the boy.
“Hey, you look familiar.” Taemin said. The boy just looked at him. “I haven’t seen you before.” The boy said. “But you need help and I have the things to help you!” He said excitedly. Taemin stared at the boy for a while as the boy got something from his packbag.
“Hey, this might hurt okay?” The boy said looking deep into Taemin’s eyes. Taemin pouted and nodded but promised himself he’d be strong. The boy put some cotton into the wound. It stung Taemin but he didn’t cry any more. After the boy dabbed the cotton around the wound, he put a pink, colourful bandage around it.
Taemin stared at his wound and the boy was staring at Taemin. “What’s your name?” Taemin said without looking at the boy. “I’m Jongin!” The boy excitedly replied. Taemin looks at him. “I’m Taemin, and you may not know this, but we’re neighbors.”
The boy’s eyes grew big and his mouth formed an o-shape. “Really? And you go to this school, too?”
“Yes.” Taemin said. The boy smiled and offered Taemin a hand. “Let’s be friends?” Jongin said, standing up. “Sure.” Taemin said, still thinking of something.
“Hey can we change your name? Jongin doesn’t sound so nice.” Taemin said, but deep inside he was thinking how much it sounded like Jonghyun.
“Uhm. I have another name, my halmeoni gave. I guess you can call me that, since we’re already chingus!” Jongin said. “Sure, what is it?”
“Kai! Call me Kai! It’s shorter.” The boy smiled at Taemin as he noticed Kai was missing some front tooth. Taemin finally smiled at Kai. “You can call me Taeminnie if you want.”
“Taeminnie!” Kibum called out from the car. The two boys look at where the sound was coming from. “Who’s going to pick you up?” Taemin asked Kai. “Uhm. Hmm. I’m walking home, today.” Kai answered.
“Oh, let’s go home together, since we’re neighbors!” Taemin said excitedly.
“Really? Oh but I don’t know.” Kai said hesitantly.
“Oh, c’mon.” Taemin dragged Kai towards their car.
“Oh, who do we have here?” Kibum asked as Taemin and Kai approached.
“Eomma, this is my new chinguya! Kai! He’s our neighbour!” Taemin excitedly introduced.
“Hello manim.” Kai said, bowing to Kibum. Kibum laughed. “Hello Kai-sshi. Is someone going to pick you up?” Kai shook his head. “Let’s get you home?” Kibum said, opening the door to the backseat. “Jeongmal kamsahamnida, manim. Jeongmal kamsahamnida Taemin.” Kai said after he got in.
“Why isn’t anyone picking you up, Kai?” Taemin asked.
“Well, halmeoni is pretty old. So I just walk home. Sometimes I take the bus but it’s too costly.” Kai answered enthusiastically. Taemin’s heart ached at what he heard.
“Uhmm. .Where are your parents?” Taemin asked hesitantly.
“Hm? Uh.. They’re dead.” Kai answered a bit too slowly.
“Oh. I’m sorry I asked that.” Taemin said. “It’s okay.” Kai replied.
Kibum looked at Kai through the rear view mirror. For a moment he saw Kai wipe his eyes with his fists. Then he went back smiling.
They arrived home and Kai got off the car. “Wooooow. We really are neighbors!” Kai exclaimed. “Maybe we can play together sometime, chingu?” Taemin smiled through the car’s open window. “I’ll see you tomorrow Kai! Maybe we can go to school together!” Taemin called out. Kai nodded and bowed again. “Ddo Jeongmal kamsahamnida Kibummanim.” Kibum smiled and waved. “Bye Taemin!” Kai said and ran towards the door of their house.
“Eomma?” Taemin said as Kibum parked the car. “Yes, Taemin?”
“We finally have new neighbors.” Taemin said, smiling. Kibum thought of what Taemin could’ve meant with that, but dismissed it. He smiled back and pinched Taemin’s cheek. He looked down at Taemin’s knee and saw the bandage.
“What happened Taeminnie?” Kibum said, shocked.
“I fell down and hurt myself...but Kai was there eomma. He was there for me. Finally someone was there to mend my wounds.” Taemin said.
Then Kibum concluded, Taemin really did mean what Kibum thought he meant. New neighbors..to replace Jonghyun..someone who could mend his wounds..someone who was there when he needed help.
But then again Kibum could just be overthinking things.
