“America?”

Jonghyun nodded.

“Eomma and appa went there.” Taemin said sadly. Jonghyun kept his eyes on the ground. “They stayed there for a week. Remember that time? When we first met?” Taemin recalled.

“Ahuh.” Jonghyun said, kicking the rock below him. Of course Jonghyun remembered the first time he met Taemin. He remembered every moment he shared with Taemin. The secret pecks they shared when Taeyeon wasn’t looking or when she was sleeping. The hugs they shared when Taemin slept over at Jonghyun’s house. He took those memories and kept them in one secure corner of his heart.

“So, how many days are you staying there, hyung?” Taemin hopefully said.

“I-I don’t know how many years, Taeminnie.” Jonghyun answered. Tears were making it to his cheeks now. Even though he was seven, he was still a crybaby. He took Taemin’s hand and held it tightly. Taemin sadly looked at their intertwined hands.

“Hyung, is this the last time our hands will be like that?” Taemin said sadly. Jonghyun nodded slowly as Taemin closed the distance between them. Taemin raised a hand and wiped the tears from Jonghyun’s cheeks as he felt hot liquid trace down his own cheeks too. Jonghyun did the same to Taemin, wiping it with his hands. Not long after, Jonghyun kissed Taemin’s soft, plump lips. The two of them were in tears, but their lips didn’t break contact.

“Hyung, will that be the last time our lips will be like that?” Taemin asked. Jonghyun heard someone call his name and turned around. His parents were already heading to their car. He nodded and hugged Taemin for the last time. “I promise to write to you, Taeminnie. Write back, okay?” Jonghyun said hurriedly. “When I learn to write, hyung.” He replied while wiping his tears.

Taeyeon emerged from somewhere and hugged Taemin. “I will miss you, Taemin. Thank you for everything. I will never forget you. Stay pretty okay?” She said, crying. “Noona, I will never forget you, too. Stay pretty, too.” Taemin said, tears flowing continuously. Jonghyun went near Taemin for the last time and said, “I’ll always love you, Taeminnie. I’ll come back for you okay?” He said. “I love you too Jonghyunnie hyung. I will wait.” Taemin replied. With that, Taeyeon dragged Jonghyun towards their car. Jonghyun looked back and waved towards Taemin. Taemin couldn’t do anything but wave his goodbye, holding on to the promise Jonghyun left him.

It was fifteen years after that fateful day: the day when Jonghyun had to leave Korea to migrate to the states with his family. The day he left behind his heart to that little boy he lovingly called Taeminnie. He was 22 years old now, and Taemin probably 19. He never forgot a single memory and he kept dreaming about Taemin at night. Sometimes he wondered if Taemin was thinking of him too. They stopped exchanging letters a few years back. He wondered why but he was very determined to go back to Korea to fulfill his promise to Taemin.

“Tomorrow’s the big day. We’re finally going back to Korea.” Jonghyun thought that night while he was in bed. The door to his room suddenly opened. “Jjong, I know you’re awake.” A woman’s voice said. “Get some sleep okay. Don’t get too excited about Taemin.” Taeyeon said entering Jonghyun’s room. Jonghyun turned his bedside lamp on as Taeyeon sat on the windowsill bed. “I don’t want you to get disappointed Jjongie, if we don’t find Taemin. Korea may not seem as big as America, but you know it would still be hard to look for him.” Taeyeon said lovingly. “Noona,” Jonghyun started “I just have to follow my heart. Besides I left my heart with him anyway.” Taeyeon just rolled her eyes. “You’re so cheesy Jjongie. It’s disgusting.” But she was smiling. “Fifteen years, it has been. Do you think he still remembers us? He was four when we left. Maybe he doesn’t remember.”

“He should noona. We used to exchange letters with each other right?”

“Yeah, but I wonder why he stopped writing to us 8 years ago.”

Then there was silence. After a while Jonghyun heard soft snoring. “Noona?” He looked over at Taeyeon, only to find her sleeping on the windowsill bed. He went over to put a blanket over her, returned to his bed, and slept.

“Taemin? Taemin is that you? It’s me Jonghyun! Do you remember me?” Jonghyun asked Taemin, who was waiting for him at the airport. “Jonghyunnie-hyung! OF COURSE I REMEMBER YOU! I held on to your promise, and you fulfilled it! I’m so glad to see you back!” Taemin exclaimed. “Wow, you’ve grown more beautiful, Taeminnie.” Jonghyun said, blushing. Upon hearing this, Taemin also blushed. “Thanks Jonghyunnie-hyung. You’ve grown, quite handsome too.” He replied. Jonghyun smiled at the ground and let out a small ng’aww sound, turning shy because of Taemin’s remark. He looked at Taemin after a while, and said “I missed you so much, can I get a hug?” although quite hesitant. Taemin looked at Jonghyun with a blank expression which made Jonghyun confused. “WAKE UP JONGHYUN! WAKE UP! WAKE UP!” Taemin suddenly was shouting while shaking Jonghyun.

Taeyeon was now shaking Jonghyun to the best of her ability and strength. “We’re gonna miss our flight shortie!” Taeyeon shouted. Upon hearing the remark, Jonghyun opened his eyes and shot up from his bed. “Who are you calling shortie? YOU SHORTIE!” He said to Taeyeon. Taeyeon was pretty sure Jonghyun hated being called shorty and although she was short herself, resorted to call Jonghyun names just to wake him up.

“Get your pants to the shower shorty, we’re gonna miss our flight to Korea. And I thought you were excited to see your beloved Taeminnie again.” Taeyeon teased. “I’ll be waiting downstairs.” She said as Jonghyun went to the shower.

“So it was only just a dream.” Jonghyun thought while taking a shower. He really missed Taemin but he didn’t hear from him for a long time.Jonghyun wished that when he returned to Korea, he’d still see Taemin there. It’s just a bonus if Taemin still remembered him. More so if Taemin still had feelings for him.

Taeyeon and Jonghyun arrived at Korea at around 4 in the afternoon. They settled in a hotel nearby. Their parents no longer came with them since they enjoyed their lives at America, and since they were pretty much successful doctors there too. Tired because of travelling and jetlag, Jonghyun lay down on the hotel bed. Taeyeon apparently still had the energy to surf the internet. Jonghyun was shocked when he was shaken. He was alarmed, thinking an earthquake was occurring. It was only Taeyeon shaking him. “Jjongie! Jjongie! Look look look! I found Taemin!” She said pointing to her laptop monitor.

Jonghyun rushed to Taeyeon’s laptop and read the latest Korean entertainment news. It had Taemin’s picture on it, but he was with a few people and they seemed enjoying themselves. “Looks like he’s really famous around here!” Taeyeon said. “He’s now a part of a boyband!” memories flashed by Jonghyun. “Remember how good he was at dancing noona?”

“Yeah. I do.”

“Maybe a talent scout spotted him?” Jonghyun assumed.

“Maybe.” Taeyeon just replied. “But anyway Jjongie, the best news I have for you is that. I can help you find him!”

“Really noona? HOW?!” Jonghyun asked, his heart racing.

“I can get you in that company!” Taeyeon exclaimed.

“Really? HOW?”

“Stop asking that question please, it’s getting annoying.” Taeyeon snapped. “So anyway, I have a contact with one of the executive people that run that company. He’s the son of the owner, and he was my classmate in the University when I was studying Business Management course. He actually asked if I was interested in partnering up with him. And now that I’m here, maybe I can contact him and reconsider his offer!”

“Wow noona. You’re amazing.” Jonghyun said and hugged his sister. “You’re only saying that because you want to see Taemin so bad. Blah. C’mon, let’s get some rest. First thing tomorrow, after shopping that is, I’ll contact Mr. Jung.”

“Thank you noona!” Jonghyun said, tears evidently forming around his eyes. He kissed Taeyeon in the cheek, went back to his bed and slept, smiling like an idiot.

“It’s a long shot. But I’ll try.” Taeyeon thought. “But I’ll do anything for my brother.”

Taeyeon dialled a number. “Yeoboseyo?”

“Yeoboseyo. This is Kim Taeyeon. Do you still remember that proposal you made me back in Uni? I’m thinking of reconsidering it.”
