Happy New Year
A year has passed and many things have changed
I find myself standing still
As the world swirls around me
All the people, the cars, the work, life…
There’s never a time to stop and reflect on anything anymore
Just time to work, rush through life
Always moving and changing
Not giving special things a second thought
A year has passed and many lessons have been learned
Lessons of love, hate, and truth
Failures and successes
Lessons of giving and taking
And learning how to forgive
Realizing people make mistakes
and that perfection is usually an unattainable ideal
Lessons of compromise
Selfishness and selflessness
Lessons of confidence
Independence and friendship
Putting myself on the line
Taking chances and being risky
These lessons learned not in a classroom
but through loving others and risking myself
and my feelings
Being out there for the world to see
and embracing the knowledge it gives me
A year has passed and I feel like a different person
Everyday had seemed the same
Mundane, boring, old…
School and work, a product of my environment
But I know that I’ve changed,
Learned things about myself
Some good and some bad
Learned about the girl I am,
About the woman I’d like to be
New experiences and new perspectives
Have put me on the road to discovering what this crazy journey is about
Where I’m going and what I’m doing
So cliché but it’s not the destination that matters
It’s all about how you get there
and about the love that surrounds you as you do it
A year has passed and love came and went
Then came again
but it came to stay
Best friends to lovers
Confusion, expectations, and hope
Honesty, compassion, and trust
Sexiness, beauty, and freedom
Warmth, safety, and tenderness
A rocky start to a beautiful ending
Love is meant to be shared
and that’s never been so clear as it is now
Without love, a heart is empty
and I’ve watched myself go from empty
to overflowing
and my heart has never been so full
A year has passed and relationships have changed
Fallen apart, grown stronger
Ties have been formed
While some have been broken
Some have grown apart
While others have never been closer
Friends, parents, teachers, neighbors
Each holds a special place in my heart
And while I might not recognize it
each and every day
I know they’re there
And the thought is enough to warm my heart
And make me feel safe
Loved
Wanted
Embraced
A year has passed and while it’s hard to remember everything
The good times, the bad
They all make for one big story
And no story is complete
Without all the highs and lows
The twists and turns
The struggles and triumphs
And while many others probably have
A similar story
Each one is special
Unique
Yet no matter who they belong to,
Those memories keep us safe
They make us stronger
Better people
Ready to keep going each day
Looking forward to a fresh start each morning
And each year
Because when that ball drops New Year’s Eve
And when the sun rises the next day
There is a renewed sense of hope
Of life
Of love
