There are a lot of wonderful benefits to posting fanfiction.

The first, of course, it the reviews. They're like little nuggets of ego stroking, perfect for someone who needs near-constant validation, like myself. Even the (EXTREMELY rare) review that might point out a problem with a story rather than just praising it all up and down the site is flattering, because that person READ your story and was paying enough attention to give negative (or constructive) criticism.

Another benefit is that you've actually got something out there. It's nice to write something and share it and know that other people are reading it, people in Italy, in Germany...in the Czech Republic. That's a pretty great feeling.

The thing is, there's another benefit, one that is...less obvious. It's almost the exact opposite situation to the catch-22 I ranted about a few months ago. It's a bit hard to describe (well, no it's not, but I want to introduce it this way, so tough), so I'm going to set a scene for you.

I'm going through the chapter I just posted, making sure it's up okay (though why it wouldn't be, I have no idea). Sadly, it's something of a filler chapter, but hey, those happen. I finish the chapter and, of course, I'm a bit unsatisfied. That would be because it's a filler chapter (duh).

So, I open my trusty documents folder and navigate my way to where the story is stored. Once there, I proceed to read the next chapter of the story.

And the next.

And the next.

Once I'd finished reading my own story, I thought about those reviewers that posted how they couldn't WAIT for the next chapter.

Those poor, poor people, stuck waiting around for a chapter that I can just dive into any time I damn well please.

Because I wrote it.

Hee. Life is sometimes, very rarely, but sometimes, sweet.
