Lions faithful stage 'orange-out,' call for Millen's ouster as hometown team trounced 41-17
DETROIT-- A half-century of futility has reached a new low for the Detroit Lions: Even Santa Claus has turned against the sad-sack squad.
Hoisting a sign calling for the ouster of team president Matt Millen, the once-merry elf hightailed it for the exit at halftime of this season's final home game Sunday at Ford Field.
The Lions were down 24-7, en route to a 41-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
"I can't take it anymore. We are pathetic," sighed Robert Woonton, 38, of Roseville, pulling down the beard of his Santa costume. "It's just too painful."
Take heart, Santa: There's plenty of company for your misery.
At the game, many Lions fans wore orange -- one of the Bengals' colors -- as a sort of fashion protest. Before the game, more than 500 frustrated fans took to the streets in a semi-serious march to protest the team that has only won one playoff game since 1957.
They chanted, held signs reading "Finally, a Parade for the Lions" and ones that displayed Millen's face alongside Bozo the Clown and Curly of the Three Stooges. Others sheathed their faces in paper bags decorated with Millen's face that read "Fire Me."
Some worried the march would descend into ugliness and further scar Detroit's image, but police recorded no arrests.
"This is my first protest," said Marcus Rodriguez, 31, of Detroit. "Yeah, there are other things in the world that matter -- like the war in Iraq and terrorism -- but here in Detroit, it's football season, and thank God it's almost over."
Millen did not discuss the demonstration during brief remarks to reporters after the game.
The event was organized by sports radio station WDFN 1130 AM radio host Sean Baligian to tell the team's owner, William Clay Ford, "you're this close to losing us as fans," he said. Baligian writes a weekly column about fantasy football for The Detroit News.
Baligian acknowledged the contradiction of fans protesting a team they choose to support, but he and others acknowledge giving up on the Lions isn't simple. Many are lifetime fans. Like disappointed parents, they love the team, but hate its behavior.
"I woke up this morning and remembered what my father said to me 40 years ago: 'Don't waste your electricity watching this team,' " said Phil Henry, 53, a Dearborn Heights salesman who wore a jersey reading "ANGRY FOR 40 YEARS."
How bad are the Lions? They prompted Rich Lebert to make his first noose. He used it to hang a dummy of Millen.
"I'm not worried about making Detroit look foolish," said Lebert, 22, of Westland. "They have no problem doing it themselves. … What the heck? This is all in good fun. The noose doesn't mean anything serious."
After making national news earlier this month by seizing signs critical of Millen, Ford Field relaxed its ban on signs Sunday. Among the sayings: "Millen for Bin Laden, Even Trade" and "Hire Me."
The crowd, though, was mostly listless -- perhaps because the Lions began the game by fumbling a kickoff and trailed early. The first paper bags on heads were spotted before the end of the first quarter.
"The crowd is lifeless because we have a lifeless team," said Dave DePrez, 21, of Shelby Township, a student at Macomb Community College. "They don't bring us celebration. They bring us no joy, so we give none back."
CBS Sports showed a brief video clip of Lions fans demonstrating against Millen during the intro to the game but otherwise took little notice of the protests.
"Today was the first time I was actually proud to be a Lions fan because we finally spoke our mind," said Mike Haydon, 20, of Allen Park. "Usually, I cover my face and deny it."

Lions faithful stage 'orange-out,' call for Millen's ouster as hometown team trounced 41-17
DETROIT-- A half-century of futility has reached a new low for the Detroit Lions: Even Santa Claus has turned against the sad-sack squad.
Hoisting a sign calling for the ouster of team president Matt Millen, the once-merry elf hightailed it for the exit at halftime of this season's final home game Sunday at Ford Field.
The Lions were down 24-7, en route to a 41-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
"I can't take it anymore. We are pathetic," sighed Robert Woonton, 38, of Roseville, pulling down the beard of his Santa costume. "It's just too painful."
Take heart, Santa: There's plenty of company for your misery.
At the game, many Lions fans wore orange -- one of the Bengals' colors -- as a sort of fashion protest. Before the game, more than 500 frustrated fans took to the streets in a semi-serious march to protest the team that has only won one playoff game since 1957.
They chanted, held signs reading "Finally, a Parade for the Lions" and ones that displayed Millen's face alongside Bozo the Clown and Curly of the Three Stooges. Others sheathed their faces in paper bags decorated with Millen's face that read "Fire Me."
Some worried the march would descend into ugliness and further scar Detroit's image, but police recorded no arrests.
"This is my first protest," said Marcus Rodriguez, 31, of Detroit. "Yeah, there are other things in the world that matter -- like the war in Iraq and terrorism -- but here in Detroit, it's football season, and thank God it's almost over."
Millen did not discuss the demonstration during brief remarks to reporters after the game.
The event was organized by sports radio station WDFN 1130 AM radio host Sean Baligian to tell the team's owner, William Clay Ford, "you're this close to losing us as fans," he said. Baligian writes a weekly column about fantasy football for The Detroit News.
Baligian acknowledged the contradiction of fans protesting a team they choose to support, but he and others acknowledge giving up on the Lions isn't simple. Many are lifetime fans. Like disappointed parents, they love the team, but hate its behavior.
"I woke up this morning and remembered what my father said to me 40 years ago: 'Don't waste your electricity watching this team,' " said Phil Henry, 53, a Dearborn Heights salesman who wore a jersey reading "ANGRY FOR 40 YEARS."
How bad are the Lions? They prompted Rich Lebert to make his first noose. He used it to hang a dummy of Millen.
"I'm not worried about making Detroit look foolish," said Lebert, 22, of Westland. "They have no problem doing it themselves. … What the heck? This is all in good fun. The noose doesn't mean anything serious."
After making national news earlier this month by seizing signs critical of Millen, Ford Field relaxed its ban on signs Sunday. Among the sayings: "Millen for Bin Laden, Even Trade" and "Hire Me."
The crowd, though, was mostly listless -- perhaps because the Lions began the game by fumbling a kickoff and trailed early. The first paper bags on heads were spotted before the end of the first quarter.
"The crowd is lifeless because we have a lifeless team," said Dave DePrez, 21, of Shelby Township, a student at Macomb Community College. "They don't bring us celebration. They bring us no joy, so we give none back."
CBS Sports showed a brief video clip of Lions fans demonstrating against Millen during the intro to the game but otherwise took little notice of the protests.
"Today was the first time I was actually proud to be a Lions fan because we finally spoke our mind," said Mike Haydon, 20, of Allen Park. "Usually, I cover my face and deny it."
