Ten bands I think you should listen to.

I have this obsession with hearing new music and as such I have discovered a lot of amazing bands in the past year or two, some of which I would like to share with you all now.

Wild Beasts

These guys played at Laneway Festival this year and I only discovered them a month or two before. Their Oxford Art Factory gig kicked so much arse I even bought a band t-shirt. Their most recent album Two Dancers is superb - here is a song from it.

The Kissaway Trail

Dark indie pop/rock - yes please! Denmark has so much great music to offer, I'm surprised more of it hasn't reached our shores. There's another Danish band further down the list. I really love this band - there's something kind of grand and textural about their music.

The Album Leaf

Years ago I was part of this LJ mixtape community and a guy made me this beautiful mix called "These Are The Sounds of Calm". The Album Leaf were on it and their music really personifies the mix title. It's all very melodic, chill, slightly electronic and very easy to digest. They are touring soon too - MUST SEE THE ALBUM LEAF.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Just when you thought upbeat shoegaze pop had died with the 90s, along comes The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Their music is so classic yet modern sounding. Put this on loud and dance to those jangly guitars to your hearts content.

Bear in Heaven

Kinda droney, kinda dark, and all in a good way. That's the only way I can think to describe these guys. I reviewed this record, totally randomly, for Fasterlouder a couple of months ago (also the last review I've done with them since). http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/reviews/music/24600/Bear-in-Heaven

Broken Bells

This is a side project of The Shins' James Mercer and Dangermouse. This album is SO DAMN GOOD - instantly likable, the perfect mix of Mercer and Dangermous flavours.

Caribou

When I first discovered Caribou, he was called Manitoba, and he had kinda scary live band which featured dudes in plastic wolf masks. It was a bit freaky. The music is wonderfully different though. It slants towards the more electronic side of things.

The Rumour Said Fire

Hello Denmark! Bring us more of your music! This music mainly features warm harmonies a la Fleet Foxes and is one of my favourite musical discoveries of this year.

Holy Fuck

Thanks be to someone at work who put this on our shared drive one day. Holy Fuck are just holy fuckin' good. Like actual real crossover electro-rock, none of that cheesy stuff that saturates the airwaves these days.

Washed Out

My most recent discovery, thanks MMF. I don't know how to describe them - just listen!
