I am happy to report that there ARE some interesting Australian bands out there. I may make it back to the ol' pub for some live music yet!

First cabs off the rank are Le Kingste and The Red Tree. http://greataustralianmusicsearch.blogspot.com/

Stay tuned for more

i'm actually searching for good 'Australian' bands; not necessarily the little local folk band in the pub down the road, and i'm also not discounting someone like Jet (note: I do not actually like Jet, nor have any urge to include them in my search ;)).

but on your point, i'm not entirely sure what you mean... are you saying that it is getting easier for Aussie acts to earn better supports/get airplay/go on tour? I would agree, in the sense that we are seeing a lot more bands getting exposure, especially as it is easier to release stuff now in this digital age, and as a result i suppose also picking up better supports, better gigs etc.

i think things have changed a lot in the past few years, especially since the days when i was regularly attending local gigs in Sydney. back then it was pretty uncommon for many Australian acts who weren't, say, Powderfinger or Silverchair to be playing places like The MEtro (1000 capacity venue), but these days I am seeing a lot of artists headlining, and at times pulling bigger crowds than some internationals.

erm.. now what was the point i was trying to make again? got distracted on a music ramble :)

ahhh.. i was thinking that you were trying to find unsigned/small-medium acts (for want of better adjectives).. and was wondering how you were going to define it.

and completely agree with the rest of what you've said!

yeah... nah! aussie bands in general. what can i say, i'm just sick of waiting for international acts to gig here every five years... i need more instant live music gratification ;)
