I just got one of those e-mail "I've got a bunch of cash and need your cash to move it, I'll split it with you" scams which is spit-take worthy only because of the name and info involved.
First thought: Do they -really- believe anyone will fall for this?
Second thought: Yeah, actually, probably somebody will.
Message reproduced below in it's entirety, with only e-mail information changed.
Hello,
This is General David Petraeus (Commander, U.S. Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A)).I have a very special request to make to you that will benefit both of us. In all my years of serving in the military I have being building up money for my retirement. Now most of this funds were made when I was serving in command in Iraq and was left behind over there. The money needs to be moved to safety. The funds which are presently in Iraq in cash loaded in a trunk box. I need you to consider being the receiver of the trunk filled with cash. We need to be very fast in our correspondence because the box is already cleared for diplomatic movement. The problem I have is that I cannot come forward to be directly involved in the dispatch of the money. This funds have being in Iraq since 2008 when I was commanding the troops in Iraq. Now we are evacuating from Iraq and I need to get the funds out. Moving it to a neutral is best for me from where I can make banking arrangement to transfer the funds in bits to America.
The total amount involved is US$10m. I want you to respond to this mail and let me know what you want as your share from this amount as you are important to me to bring the money out of Iraq. I am now in Afghanistan as commanding officer. I do not want any scandal because of this money and I do not want to loss the money. It is a problem for serving military officer to have such amount of money and that is why I left the money in our military command when I was leaving Iraq. Hoping that my retirement will be approved quickly. That has not happened and now we are pulling out.
Once we have a clear understanding of what you want out of this money. I will need you to send me all the information about your personality because I want to know you properly. I believe we can be good friends. I am waiting for your confirmation of interest and total commitment to my offer and guarantee of secrecy regarding this communication. You are to contact me via [CLEARLY FAKE EMAIL ADDRESS REDACTED] for full details thanks.
General David
So let me see if I understand this: a highly respected military leader, a man who has been mentioned as a candidate to be our miltary's first five-star general since Marshall, has a trunk full of $10 million in cash that he left behind in Iraq. There's nobody there he trusts enough to forward it, and he apparently lacks the pull to have one box loaded onto a C-130 and sent his way. So he picks a random person by e-mail and divulges information that if true would not only end his military career but also likely land him in jail.
Yeah, I'm buyin' into that one.
(EDITED because weirdly the bulk of the post never came through originally.)
