Inventions
Echo Tropism The first time it happens Kyungsoo doesn't realize he's dreaming. He's walking down the street, birds are singing, there's music drifting out of the coffee shops along with the rich smell of coffee and the muffled sounds of people conversing in cheerful tones, when a boy steps out onto the road, headphones in his ears, he's nodding his head to the beat of the inaudible music and doesn't see the semi-trailer bearing down on him until-
The sound, even in a dream, is indescribable. A kind of hollow thud, an echo of bone and metal and the flat impact of skin against concrete as the boy hits the front of the truck, is flung backwards to the ground, the wet sound of his skull impacting the street and the shrill squeal of tires as the truck brakes, the burning smell of rubber gripping the road and yet momentum makes it impossible for it to stop, as the truck keeps going and drags the body in a slick trail of red under the chassis until it comes to a shuddering stop fifty metres later.
There's an abandoned sneaker on the road where the rubber skids marks begin and the blood slick between them. It looks like a normal shoe, barely worn, the tread still textured and uncaked by mud and stones. The shoelaces aren't tied properly and in the sudden echoing silence, Kyungsoo thinks about his cousin who doesn't tie his shoelaces properly either.
Kyungsoo loses the contents of his stomach on the sidewalk, his eyes swimming with years as he wakes up screaming into his sheets and throws up all over the floor of his bedroom.
Flood Poems The next time it happens, a few nights later but Kyungsoo is so bone achingly tired, trying not to fall asleep and dream the nightmare back, he knows it's a dream but he can't do anything about it.
There's kind of wrongness to the air, it's too flat, the world too small, his skin a little too tight on his bones. He pinches himself but he doesn't wake up, and that's when he starts getting scared.
Kyungsoo looks around. He's at the beach, it's a sunny day and the birds are singing overhead, there are only fluffy white clouds in the sky and the sand is warm under his bare toes. He's in swim trunks, chest bare to the heat of the sun, and his skin is warm in the hot summer air. He doesn't want to swim but his body doesn't listen, it's hot, it wants to go in the water.
Kyungsoo tries to dig in his heels but it's no use. His feet are carrying him to the water, stepping in over the sharp shards of shells underfoot as he steps into the waves, ankle high, knee high, waist high and then he's swimming, lazy relaxed strokes out to where he stops moving forwards and starts treading water. It's a nice day.
Kyungsoo doesn't think it's a nice day. His eyes, running over the people swimming, floating on inflatable tubes, lying on their backs, catch on a familiar face. The boy.
He's floating on his back, eyes closed, face turned up to the sun. Floating out just a little too deep, head nudging the floating bead that marks the end of the swimming area and divides them from the boating area beyond.
The waves roll, making hills and valleys and the boy slips over the rope barrier when it sinks slightly with the waves, he doesn't even realize it as he keeps floating out to sea.
Out to see where there's a motor boat coming in a little too fast, too close to the swimming area, Kyungsoo opens his mouth but nothing comes out as a wave comes and dumps water down his throat and he's choking, spluttering for air when the boat starts to move past the boy, just missing him somehow, Kyungsoo hopes for a miracle and then the slipstream catches the boy and carried him twirled around to the back, there's no time to think, just a terrible sickening crunch as he gets tangled, head-first in the prop.
There's blood, now, in the water, and Kyungsoo finally opens his mouth and screams.
Entity Kyungsoo's never seen the boy, so even as he wanders through school the next morning, almost zombie-like in his fatigue, he's glad he won't have to face the person he's just seen die twice, in some of the worst ways possible.
"Hello class," the teacher says at the front, Kyungsoo isn't really listening because it's not a lecture and there won't be a test on anything she says right now, anyway he's honestly too tired, head resting on his arms as he just sits there and stars at a blank spot on the wall, "Please welcome new student Oh Sehun to our class!"
Kyungsoo is too tired but appearances are appearances so he obligingly sits up, putting his hands together automatically to start clapping when his eyes skid over the new student's face and he stops moving, time freezing for just a moment as he recognizes his face.
The boy from the dreams. The boy who dies.
Sehun looks bored but maybe he's just shy. He waves at the class, bag slung on one shoulder. It's a red backpack, the colour a little too close to the blood smeared on the ground. Kyungsoo looks at the ground. Sehun is wearing the white shoes.
He feels suddenly, overwhelmingly sick.
"May I be excused?" Kyungsoo says, holding up a hand and trying to keep the contents of his stomach from rising, trying and failing as he feels the acid climbing his throat. The teacher takes one look at his face and nods, Kyungsoo half tripping over his desk in his hurry to leave the room.
His eyes catch Sehun's as he passes by, and Sehun's eyes widen, or maybe it's just his imagination. The door slams shut behind him as Kyungsoo makes a run for the washroom.
Luminous Insects Kyungsoo can't help falling asleep again, even though he doesn't think he'll ever be able to sleep again.
He does anyway.
He falls asleep with Sehun's face in his head, and opens his eyes to Sehun's face in his dream.
This Sehun is looking at him, seems to know him, as they stand on either side of the garden, a rose hedge between them. The air is thick, somehow, in the garden, and Sehun is saying something but Kyungsoo can't hear what it is.
Kyungsoo steps closer, and Sehun starts waving his arms in the air, the motion frantic. Kyungsoo blinks, looks again, and realizes that Sehun is inside an arboretum, the glass is so clear that he missed it upon first glance. He takes a step closer, tries to examine the hedge but the thorns are thickly placed upon the stems and he can't seem to get through as he catch on his clothing and tear at his skin.
It hurts.
Kyungsoo looks up again and Sehun isn't shouting anymore. Now he's pounding on the glass and it looks like he's trying to break it, but the glass holds firm. There's a strange feeling in Kyungsoo's stomach; it feels like fear, liquified into acid that's eating away at his stomach lining, watching, frozen, and Sehun's motions grow more frantic, his fists reddening from smashing against the glass, and that's when Kyungsoo sees the bees.
The arboretum is filling with bees, only a few at first but then more and more and Kyungsoo realizes that they're stinging Sehun, stinging and dropping but there are more and more and they keep stinging him, he's puffing up, disappearing behind a thick curtain of black and yellow and the luminous sheen of tiny wings as Kyungsoo fights to get through the rose hedge but is held back by the thorns.
Peaceable Child The first thing Kyungsoo does when he wakes up, after getting dressed and eating breakfast and walking to school, all the usual trappings of the morning that don't bear mentioning, is march right up to Sehun, looming over his desk, and ask him a question.
"Sehun," Kyungsoo says, and looks him straight in the eye, "do you dream?"
Sehun just looks at him and blinks and finally he replies, "Well, yes, like normal people. Why?"
Kyungsoo steps back in surprise and thinks. Sehun doesn't look disturbed at the thought of dreaming so he can't be having the same dreams he's having, right? Wrong.
"I was just wondering," Kyungsoo answers, waving a hand absently as he thinks about this turn of events, already walking towards his desk when Sehun stops him with a small cough.
"Do you dream?" Sehun asks, and it's not a yes or no question.
"Lately I've been dreaming about someone dying," Kyungsoo says, and waits for Sehun's response.
There's a pause. None of the other students seem to have noticed the strange exchange between Kyungsoo and the new student but someone is bound to comment on it soon, because the air around them is decidedly weighted.
"Does that person happen to be me?" Sehun asks, and Kyungsoo knows. But why aren't you bothered?Kyungsoo thinks, though he doesn't ask. Trying to ask someone why something doesn't bother them is like trying to ask the sun why it shines. A completely pointless exercise in futility.
The teacher walks into the classroom, and Kyungsoo makes his way to his seat, pulling out his chair so he can sit down, while still turning the question, and the answer, over in his head.
Sun Locations / Sun Coda When Kyungsoo falls asleep and into the dream this time, he opens his eyes on the view of sand. There's sand everywhere, sand and sun and nothing else.
There's a slight weight on his shoulder, a warmth over the light fabric of his shirt, and he turns to see Sehun standing beside him.
"Hi," Kyungsoo says, just to see if he can talk this time. He can.
"Hi," Sehun says, and Kyungsoo can hear him too.
"This is new," Kyungsoo says, and looks around, but there's nothing anywhere, he doesn't see anything at all. "Maybe you're not going to die today?" he asks, and then mentally chastises himself for bringing it up. Sehun laughs.
"Don't worry," he says, because Kyungsoo's guilt at mentioning it is written plainly across his face. "I usually have a feel for these things." Kyungsoo just looks at him, and waits for him to explain. "Well, I'm used to it," Sehun continues, looking around, sand everywhere and a deep blue sky. He steps away from Kyungsoo, walks further out onto the sand. His feet leave little hollows that are soon refilled by the tiny grains trickling in, everything in this dream universe seems determined to erase the existence of a certain Oh Sehun. Kyungsoo watches him walk away, and tries to convince himself not to run after him.
It doesn't work.
He's just taking a step towards the other boy when there's a sudden sound-an explosion, maybe, Kyungsoo isn't sure because it all happens so soon. . . first there's nothing and then fire is falling from the sky, pieces of shrapnel, larger pieces of metal, flaming bits and red bits and then the propeller from a jet plane falls right out of the sky and lands on top of where Kyungsoo could see Sehun standing, just a moment before.
He never even saw it coming.
Recipient Kyungsoo is tired of this. He's tired of waking up screaming, his voice hoarse, coughing into his pillow and reassuring his mother that he's honestly okay, he just had a nightmare and he's fine. Kyungsoo has a headache and he's in a bad mood walking to school, just tired of everything.
When he sees Sehun's grinning face, he doesn't feel any better.
"Why do you look okay?" he asks, walking right up to Sehun and poking him in the chest with his finger, because he kind of wants to punch the smile off his face but that's not allowed in class and anyway he's already watched Sehun die too many times. The thought of punching him isn't very appealing.
"You look tired," Sehun replies, and Kyungsoo just glares.
"I keep seeing a certain person keep dying in my dreams," he says, and he doesn't care if he sounds frustrated. He is frustrated.
"Well, I die in them," Sehun says, and shrugs. "I sleep just fine." He looks down at Kyungsoo, who doesn't stop glaring.
"You die," Kyungsoo says, "But I have to watch what happens to your body after you're already dead. Do you know what a body looks like after the head has gone through the prop of a motor boat?" He feels queasy at the thought, and Sehun has the decency to turn a pale shade of green. "I thought so," Kyungsoo says, and doesn't feel bad when Sehun runs for the bathroom, narrowly avoiding running into the teacher as he sprints out the door. Kyungsoo just shrugs at the teacher, who shrugs back and walks to her desk.
Psychic Automation When they're all getting ready to leave the classroom at the day, Kyungsoo stuffing his textbooks in his bag any which way because he still has a headache and just wants to go home and maybe, just once, not dream about anything at all, he's surprised to hear hesitant footsteps walking across the floor to stop just next to his desk. He looks up, and is even more surprised.
"I had an idea," Sehun says, and he sounds a little awkward.
"Yes?" Kyungsoo prompts. He might as well hear it.
"Well I was thinking," Sehun tries to explain, and Kyungsoo can tell that he's embarrassed, "what if I came to your house for a sleepover?" Kyungsoo blinks. This is absolutely not what he was expecting Sehun to say.
"Why?" he finally asks, zipping his backpack shut and slipping it over first one arm, then the other, because he doesn't want to have back problems when he's older. Sehun just looks at him for a while, silent in the muffled shouts and general chaos of all the other students going home.
"This is about dreams," he finally says, and now that he's actually explaining he's not as awkward about it. "What if we try sleeping close to each other?"
Kyungsoo thinks about it, thinks about being tired and the dreams and there isn't' really a good reason not to. "Okay," he says.
They end up sharing Kyungsoo's bed, because it feels like they might need to be touching.
"Is there a reason we need to be touching?" Kyungsoo asks, and Sehun just looks at him.
"What feels right to you?" he asks, and Kyungsoo nods, grudgingly, but it's true. They fall asleep, back to back, the skin of their arms touching, and it feels okay.
And when Kyungsoo wakes up, not screaming this time, listening to the sound of the birds singing outside, he realises that he turned around in his sleep; he's curled around Sehun now, his arm reaching around the other boy and holding him in a half hug, Kyungsoo's face pressed into Sehun's warm back.
