And no, it's not what you're thinking. I'm kind of sad that I passed up the StS drinking team tshirt. ):
WHOOOOAAAAYEAH that was awesome. It was a very chill show compared to the last few that I'd been to and I just kind of gave up and relaxed during Katatonia since they play that kind of trippy prog that makes me want to zone out. They've got a really fitting band name.
I had no problems with my camera (except for security thinking I was using flash when I wasn't, herp.) and got some pretty decent shots despite using only my kit lens and having absolute shit for lighting.
I had a ton of fun hanging out with
mysticyourheart in line. We seriously need to line party more often. Some guy noticed my Hello Kitty wallet and commented on it, saying something like "lolwat, you're at a Katatonia show and you have a Hello Kitty wallet?"
I'm not sure if he was impressed or thought I was an absolute retard.
Orphaned Land was way cool. Much more fun than I thought they were going to be and their drummer was absolutely adorable. During an instrumental bit of a song he got up and started belly dancing. Their vocalist assured us that he is not Jesus, however their bassist was Batman.
STS WAS GREAT AS ALWAYS. Unfortunately I chose the absolute worst spot to stand in for photographing Juha. I'd expected him to be in the same place as he was last time, so I stood right there. Unfortunately he and Mr. Grumpypants the keyboardist decided they'd switch sides with lead guitar + bass, so I couldn't get decent pictures of either of them. Mr. Grumpypants is arguably the most interesting person in all of STS, and is the doom metal equivalent of Antero Manninen (ex Apocalyptica). Once again, Mikko had on a Type O Negative shirt, though it was different than the one he had on last time I saw them.
Edit: I just remembered this: Juha tried to raise his guitar up in the air and wound up hitting the ceiling because the venue is so tiny. Fffffffffff. He made this kind of "lol oops" face and then just continued holding his guitar up with the neck hitting the roof. Way to go.
I... don't really know how I feel about Katatonia. I really like their style of music (especially when Opeth does it. HURF I'M PISSING YOU OFF CHRIS) but I feel that it's the type of music that I don't really want to hear live? It's just so relaxing that I'd rather be sitting somewhere listening to it on an album than standing up and cheering them on. Unfortunately after STS I moved to the back (and subsequently got pinned in a corner with Chris for a while) so I barely got any view of them actually playing. I couldn't bring myself to throw up the horns during their set since they just didn't make me feel all "HELL YEAH" like OL and STS did. I just resorted to golf clapping for Katatonia.
After the show I hung around out in the courtyard for a while hoping to get a picture of at least one member of one band. 4/5s of Swallow the Sun were out drinking so I wound up taking their picture. Of course, Juha was the one member missing. Their bassist had run off by the time I actually got up to go take their picture too. OH WELL. I told them they were awesome and to come back ASAP and shook hands with Mikko, lead guitar and Mr. Grumpypants (who is considerably less grumpy looking when not on stage). They had like 12 empty margarita glasses between the three of them.
Then I ran away and had McDonalds, which seems to be becoming an after-concert tradition.
The end.
akhsdbakghg okay so I used my kit lens under shit lighting and I managed to get pics like THIS?
I AM NEVER GOING BACK TO YOU, POINT AND SHOOT.
Orphaned Land:
THE MOTHERFUCKING DARK KNIGHT HIMSELF. WHAT A BADASS.
Not!Jesus. I took the most pictures of him because he was wearing white, which is very, very kind to a camera in low lighting.
Swallow the Sun:
Okay so by this point I wasn't getting great shots of STS so I just set my shutter to bulb and had some fun. TRIPPIN' BALLS.
Dat shirt. Thanks Mikko, for making the entire audience feel bad because we no longer have Peter Steele in this world.
PICTURED RIGHT: MR. GRUMPYPANTS. He pretty much makes that same face the entire show. I caught him smiling a few times and then he'd immediately go back to looking angry as fuck as soon as he noticed somebody looking at him.
Clearest (and pretty much only) shot of Juha. He's so moe. He kept blowing the hair out of his face and then making a really derpy smile afterwords.
/FANGIRL
The only picture I took of Katatonia. I was so far back that it just really wasn't worth taking pictures of them 'cause I couldn't see anything.
L-R: Some chick, Mikko, some other chick, some guy (who I thought was in OL but I guess isn't?), Lead Guitar, Mr. Grumpypants.
Center: ALL THE MARGARITAS.
I would like to point out that I hand-held this shot at 1/3rd of a second. I AM SO FUCKING PROUD THAT IT ACTUALLY TURNED OUT.
