so I tried the climbing wall at Hopkins today; I didn't pass the belay test, but I was still able to climb (and hopefully will pass next week and could then belay).

but the first time, I made it halfway up the wall, looked down and saw one of my friends belaying me, realized I might be afraid of heights (or at least that's what my faster than normal heartbeat and sweaty palms were suggesting), and freaked out. "ok, take! I'm done!" I tried again later and almost made it to the top, but again, part of it was nerves, realizing just how high I was and how well did I really tie my knot anyway? in retrospect, it was a bit silly to stop 6 feet or so from the top (especially since it was the easy trail and most people make it up first time climbing), but next time, I'll touch that "V"!

I have to admit, it wasn't as fun as I thought it be, but I think with a bit more practice to get over the nervousness (and the 100,000 years of evolution that tells our bodies that hanging 20 feet in the air's not a good thing), it'll be more enjoyable.
