New Year, New Who

That's right, finally, a new episode!

And, oh ("Oh!") my goodness, I don't think I have ever gone from "this is... fine, I guess" to "OMG, I wanna watch that again!" so quickly at the end of anything before. Ye gods, I am so easy for a surprise Master appearance that it's almost embarrassing. And this one 100% took me by surprise. So far I like this new guy, too! Even if I am very sad at the thought that we'll probably never get to see Jodie Whittaker and Michelle Gomez together.

And, of course, now I have a gazillion questions about what happened between "The Doctor Falls" and here. Which may never be answered, and I am okay with that. Although I am very curious about what happened with the reformation attempt. I guess it didn't stick.

Anyway. That totally redeemed the ep for me, because otherwise, yeah, I was a bit meh about it. Some of the spy stuff was mildly entertaining, and the cast was good. (I am honestly not sure why we haven't seen Stephen Fry on Who before now.) The aliens are at least somewhat interesting, too, and the very simple-looking bright white silhouette effects for them worked remarkably well. But the pacing seemed off, and mostly I just wasn't really feeling it. Until suddenly, I was. And now I am very excited for next week!

Some stray thoughts:

I had wondered what impact all this random wandering off to travel with the Doctor was doing to Yaz's job, so I'm glad they at least addressed that. Is the Doctor forging all those secondment orders for her?

I do love the Doctor's ridiculous party outfit.

Partway through the episode, I found myself wondering just when the heck the Doctor had time to strike up relationships-by-text with random spy dudes. Then I remembered that the Twelfth Doctor spent all those decades stuck on Earth, and realized that he probably got up to all kinds of weird crap like that to try to keep himself from getting too bored. Then, at the end, thinking about the reason why Twelve was stuck on Earth and who he was actually corresponding with (assuming that it was Twelve, which I am going to believe until told otherwise), and it all becomes very timey-wimily amusing.
