The Rani looked down at the girl's outstretched hand, then back up at her face. "The Rani?" she said. Surely not. She ought to have been able to sense something. And she'd never have so little control as to regenerate looking that young, never mind acting that young.
The girl's hand dropped. "No. Rani." She laughed nervously. "Just Rani. It would sound pretty silly the other way, wouldn't it? I mean, who goes around calling themself 'The'?"
"Yes," said the Rani, turning the word into a sneer. "Never mind. I can't imagine what I was thinking."
