In Which My Head Continues To Remain In Small Fandom Land

OMG, it turns out that Sapphire and Steel is complete crack. Or some kind of drug, anyway. Probably some sort of hallucinogen mixed with barbiturates. All I know is, it's bizarrely addictive, and whatever it is, I've been downing it like candy. I don't think it's gotten any faster paced or anything, either but somehow I've stopped noticing its ( Read more... )

You've made me really excited, because I just received volume 1 from Netflix today! I can't wait til the kids go to bed. (Any chance this is at all kid-friendly, or will they probably just get confused and wander away?)

It doesn't show anything beyond a PG rating, but I suspect a lot of it would be pure nightmare fuel for kids (if they hadn't got bored and wandered away by then). It's pretty creepy for adults, and it's got that dream logic thing ...

Thanks for the warning -- we don't need the nightmares. After bed it is, then.

Used to watch them with my mom when I was about 12 and it freaked me out big time. Although I do wonder whether todays children would be quite so bothered by it as most of it is very psychological and the pace was so much slower than most programmes are now. I expect my kids would be bored by it before they got scared.

I think it's one of the most amazing shows ever made. I wanted to be Sapphire, I thought she was so beautiful and elegant *sigh*

She really is marvelously elegant, isn't she? Honestly, I think the only reason this show works at all is because the lead actors have so much charisma that it leaks out all over the place no matter how subdued or alien they're being.

Oh, my. Well, don't blame me if you end up hating it! It would be an entirely reasonable reaction, IMO. I still can't quite figure out why I don't hate it. But if you're not sure at the beginning, I'd say keep watching, because eventually it might do something interesting to your brain. :)

And I'd think the most likely reaction from modern kids would simply be to get confused and bored and wander away, but rydra_wong isn't wrong about the possibility for nightmare fuel.

I didn't see it as a kid, but if I did, one thing that would have bothered me is how often the innocent get sacrificed. That's scary.

That's quite impressed me about it, actually. And quite surprised me, the first time. "Did he just... Wait... Oh, YOU BASTARD!" :)

Steel and Avon have a lot in common. ;^)

The resemblance is actually a little disconcerting. McCallum even sounds like Darrow!

By the way, word of advice for when you're watching the DVDs. If you see "introduction" on the menu, I recommend not playing it as an introduction. The only one I've listened to all the way through was the one for the final episode, but I'm glad I listened to it after, rather than before, because it was hugely spoilery.

Thanks for the tip. Last night I took an antihistamine because I have a tewwible cold, and I fell asleep instead of watching. :(

I know how that is. Those things knock me right out, too.
