My mother just left after a week-long visit during which we did some vacationy things, so I haven't really been online much for a while. So this is a little bit of a random catch-up post for me, I guess, with the traditional Three Things That Make a Post:
1. Aww, look, the BBC decided to herald my return from RL with... some very, very weird news. RTD is coming back?! I don't think any of us saw that coming. I'm not entirely sure how to feel about it, myself. My feelings towards the guy are kind of mixed. He did a lot of things with the show that I really liked and appreciated, and others that I really, um, didn't. There is, of course, That One Thing I Will Never Ever Forgive Him For, which honestly is a very big deal for me, as it even makes it hard for me to go back and watch any Donna episodes, when she would easily still be one of my all-time favorite companions otherwise. But, that aside, despite his flaws and missteps, I think I am overall fairly well-disposed towards him. He wrote some entertaining TV, and, more importantly, he brought Doctor Who back in a form that was, to me, recognizably and essentially still Doctor Who, and that is not something to take for granted.
I also kind of feel like it saves me a bit from fretting about what some new, unknown person will do with Who at this point, as RTD is certainly a known quantity. Well, more or less, anyway. I'm sure he's changed some over the past mumblety-mumble years. (Let's not think about how many, shall we? I feel old enough as it is.) Although maybe that's an irrational thing to feel, as I have absolutely zero idea what his take on any of the changes Chibnall's made might be. Well, I can definitively say that I like him better as a writer than Chibnall, overall. So that's something. But, while I know some people are likely to want to bang their heads on a wall at the thought, I'd much, much rather have had Moffat back.
2. Just because it amused me: I was sitting at my computer desk showing my mother something online, when she looked over at the Good Omens funko pop figures sitting on the desk and asked, "Who's the guy with the sunglasses?" (It actually took me a moment to realize what she meant. I thought she was referring to something we were looking at online.) Not wanting to spew too much fannish enthusiasm all over her, I stuttered out something about him being a character from a TV show that was based on a book, both of which were really good.
"He's cute," she said. Which, I have to say, tickled me unreasonably. I'm still kind of smiling about it. My 72-year-old mother thinks Crowley is cute! Well, at least in funko pop form, anyway.
3. This particular vacation period was kind of bad timing with respect to the fic exchanges I've signed up for. Fortunately, I was able to get my Remix story finished early, so that's good to go. It does mean I have less time for working on my Multifandom Tropefest story, though. And I'll likely have even less time, due to some other RL stuff, plus I haven't gotten my work schedule for October yet, and I'm worried that'll end up being inconvenient, too. Still! I was able to devote some thought to the subject in random idle moments this week, and I at least have a nice idea for what I'm going to write for it, even if I still have to work out the details. So I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about it.
