I read the spam=CO2 in the news today as well. I think it seems bogus though. Perhaps the added time to delete spam would produce greater energy if office workers were staying longer in the office to finish the work that was offset by the spam hunting. I'm not convinced that is happening. The spam hunting may reduce productivity, but the amount of energy the computer uses during those 9-5 hours would likely not be altered.

"The PC on our desks uses more power when they do work, so the numbers are based on the additional work they use when dealing with spam," he said.

You're already doing work! Deleting spam is just doing different work.

MacAfee has a vested interest in a positive result from this study, too. Making people more interested in the "greening" their inbox with spam filters makes financial sense to them. Whatever. It's just one more stupid thing people will say they are doing to be "green", when they really they're still driving to go three miles, eating lots of beef and fish. If they really wanted to reduce their computer's carbon footprint, they would turn it off during when they're not there. Those businesses installing MacAfee's spam filters (hey, spam IS evil!) should turn off ALL the office lights at night.

Jeez, sorry for the rant.

Lol, no I agree. OTOH, I do think targeting spam people at the source is a good idea. I don't spend much time on my spam, though I do have to actually glance through it on Yahoo! since it frequently filters stuff I don't want it to.
