He wasn’t exactly sure how he was going to explain the sudden appearance of his sister when he’d claimed to be spending the weekend in Vegas.

He was kind of operating without a plan.

He wasn’t sure why he’d lied in the first place, since he was allegedly an honest guy. Some kind of rationalization to himself about how it didn’t really matter because it wasn’t anyone’s business.

It wasn’t like he’d planned on dragging Amber back with him he just couldn’t stand to leave her all small and broken in some freaking hospital bed talking to a damn social worker.

So he’d signed the paper work, packed up her crap and gotten her discharged.

Now she was sitting in the passenger seat, staring at him like he was a stranger, which was probably pretty close to the damn truth.

“I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

“What?” she asked.

“I’m sorry.”

She blinked. “For what?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “Everything.”

She shrugged. “What’s it like?”

“Seattle?”

“Mmhmm.”

“Rains a lot.”

“I saw that on tv.”

“You get used to it.”

“What’s gonna happen to him?” she whispered.

“I don’t know,” he said. “He’ll be okay.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. They’re gonna help him, get him the right meds he’ll be…he’ll be Aaron again soon.”

“Then…I’ll go back?”

“No,” he said, drumming his fingers nervously on the steering wheel. “No, I was thinking you’d stay here with me.”

“Aaron said you live with a bunch of people.”

“Even more now.”

“They won’t mind?”

He shrugged. “If they do I’ll get us our own place.”

She nodded to herself, “Thank you,” she whispered.

“Don’t,” he said. “I should have…I should have done all of this years ago.”

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not.”

“It’s over now.”

He didn’t correct her, point out that it was never really over, that the hits just kept on coming, because she’d figure it out soon enough.

Or maybe it would be different this time.

He’d given up trying to guess.

I love it. And they would never mind Amber. MerDer are moving out and AppleJacks and Lexie will love on her like the family she should had. (And Timothy can find her in Seattle and skip the incommunicado part of deployment) :P
