“You’re it for me,” Jaimie murmured.

“Hmm?” Dean mumbled.

“You, you’re…you’re it for me. They’ll never be anybody else. Only you.”

His lips curled into a grin. “Kind of a weird thing to hear from a girl who has a boyfriend.”

“Had a boyfriend,” she protested. “We broke up.”

“And you’re very sad.”

“I am,” she said. “I’m…sad. I’m not a monster, I’m not a horrible person, I’m not an ice princess.”

“Hey,” he said, wrapping an arm around her. “Hey, hey, I didn’t say that.”

“I know,” she said. “I’m being crazy, I’m overreacting.”

“Why don’t we get back to that part where I’m your one and only and you’d be lost without me?” he asked. “Cause I liked where that was going.”

“How do you know where that was going?” she asked.

“Well we’re already naked in bed,” he shrugged. “So it seemed like it was probably going somewhere pretty good for me.”

“You’re such a pig,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“A pig who’s like, your only love.”

“Yes, because I’m a sad failure of a person.”

“Enough of that bullshit,” he muttered. “You’re not a failure.”

She shrugged. “I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of.”

“And you survived. And you’re a fucking cop now. You save the damn world, sweetheart.”

“And that makes up for everything else?”

“Yeah.”

“At least if you follow the gospel according to Dean Bendis.”

“Which is a very underrated religion,” he said. “But I’m always looking for converts.”

“I bet you are.”

“Not like that.”

“No?” she asked.

“No,” he said. “Not any more.”

“What changed?” she asked.

He shrugged, tucking blonde strands of hair behind her ears. “You’re it for me too.”

She smiled shyly. “Really?”

“Truly.”

“Lucky me,” she said, kissing him softly.

“Lucky you.”

She pulled back, studying him. “You love me?”

He nodded.

“Are you going to tell me that someday?” she asked.

“Maybe someday. For your birthday, Christmas, some other holiday I forget about.”

“Pig. Disgusting pig.”

“Why don’t you just admit that you don’t want me any other way?” he asked.

“Why don’t you admit that you love me?” she tossed back.

“Thought I already did.”

“Why can’t you just say it?” she asked.

“Why can’t you just accept that you know it? You know me. Inside and out. You don’t need to hear how I feel about you because you already know.”

“Maybe I want to hear. Maybe I need to.”

“Maybe,” he said, “you should be smart enough by now to know that saying something doesn’t make it true.”

She swallowed slowly. “I know when you’re lying.”

“This really matters to you,” he said, fingers running down her back.

“It does,” she said.

“Fine. I love you. I’ll always love you. If you ever leave I’ll be a miserable bastard for the rest of my life without you. Happy now?”

“Thrilled,” she said, smiling brightly. “Was that so hard?”

“Excruciating. Now do I get a reward?”

“Hmm,” she said. “We can probably work something out.”

“That’s what I’m talking about.”
