Last week I went on vacation with my family to Canada, specifically Niagra Falls and Toronto. So that was pretty amazing. We went on the Maid of the Mist at Niagra, which was amazing. Nature is just kind of incredible like that. The weirdest thing is the area that's grown around the falls though. The main street basically looks like a carnival. It's all haunted houses and wax museums and terribly cheesy, touristy gift shops. Kind of insane.
Going through customs was kind of funny. Apparently pepper spray isn't allowed in Canada, which we didn't know, and Heidi happened to have a small thing of it on her keychain. We had to either turn around and get rid of it or "surrender it to the Crown." That is exactly the phrase they used, I swear.
We ate at a terrible Italian restaurant on the main strip in Niagra Falls. We basically decided the only reason they make a profit is all the tourists, because there is no way they get repeat business. The food looked like it'd been frozen and reheated. They couldn't even be bothered to make it look good.
I think Toronto would be a pretty sweet city to live in. Heidi found a quote in a newspaper that Toronto is like New York with the crap scraped off. I think that's a pretty accurate assessment.
We went to the beach on Lake Ontario, which was still lovely even though the sand is actually rocks. I might even have gotten a tiny bit of a tan, crazily enough.
Traffic in Canada was kind of insane though. Everyone drives very close to one another. When we were driving through Toronto I felt like we were playing chicken with cars on the other side of the road half the time, and if there's an inch of room between you and the car in front of you, another car is guaranteed to try to squeeze in.
It was a good vacation. I came back to work yesterday feeling pretty relaxed.
I've finally convinced Jon to add Doctor Who to his list of Halloween costumes, because yes, that's right, he has to have multiple. He's insane. But he did kind of promise last year, and he's finally into it enough that he's agreed to be Eleven. I was thinking I would be Amy Pond, but I've changed my mind. I'd rather be River Song, she's way more badass. Amy's grown on me a little, but I still don't really like her.
The problem with being River is choosing which outfit. My first choice is The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, like
this, but the jacket they used isn't really being sold anymore, and it was super expensive when it was new. If I can find something similar then I'd still love to do it. Second choice would be
this but I feel like I'd have to make it myself, and even if I had any sewing skills, our sewing machine is broken. Guess I'll have to see how things go.
Diane, Halloween is your department, so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated =)
