Wow.
That was an intense weekend. It felt more like a week.
I was visiting UC San Francisco for my very first graduate school interview. I arrived on Thursday night, and they kept me busy from pretty much the moment my feet touched California ground until I left on Sunday. The six faculty interviews were very nerve-wracking, easily inducing insomnia and sweaty palms, but there wasn't a ton of pressure other than that. Mine went well, I think--I didn't commit any major faux pas (that I know of), and positive things were said to me. But maybe they still didn't think that I was good enough for their school. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks, after they interview their second batch of candidates and decide who they want. Come on guys, pick me, pick me!
If they called me up tomorrow to tell me that I was accepted, I'd be tempted to enroll immediately, because I really liked what I saw. As it is, though, I don't expect to hear from UCSF until after I've visited UW, and then I may still visit Berkeley at the end of February. Regardless, I wouldn't want to pick the place that I'm going to spend countless hours of the next 4-6 years of my life without seeing my other (potential) options. The only thing that worries me about San Francisco is how expensive it is to live there. I mean, I know I wouldn't have to live under a lab bench and bathe in the chemical safety showers, but it would be nice not to have to genotype my slumlord to make up the deficit in my monthly rent payment.
