personality. Although he was originally intended to be a comical character, Katou’s personality steadily grows to be very deep and thoroughly tragic as the series progresses. At first glance, he appears as nothing more than your stereotypical delinquent: arrogant, violent and exceptionally foul-mouthed, caring about no one except for himself. While this is unfortunately true to some extent, there is a lot more going on in Katou’s head than he lets people see. For starters, he admits to only ever being good at running away from his problems instead of facing them, be it by literally disappearing or by taking illicit drugs to block it all out. He loathes himself more than anyone could possibly imagine, often referring to himself in his mind as ‘rotten’ or ‘trash’-the absolute worst kind of person.
Despite his seemingly carefree attitude, Katou has a rather hard time forming close relationships with people-particularly women-due to the circumstances surrounding his childhood. He openly admits to hurting people before they can hurt him and betraying people before he can be betrayed, simply because it pains him less to do so in the end. Only a very small number of people have managed to worm their way into his heart, and although he wouldn’t admit to it under torture, Katou cares a great deal about them because they were the only ones to ever give a shit about him in return. As a result, Katou can be pretty stubborn in his loyalty to them when the situation calls for it, going as far as to state that the day he screws his friends over is the day he stops being Katou Yue.
At his best, Katou is a loyal and almost trustworthy kind of guy. He is quite willing to fight beside and lay down his life for the people who actually matter to him, proving to be a reliable friend and ally. At his worst however, he is nothing more than a selfish and violent junkie, living for himself and only acting when it will benefit him in some kind of way. He’s not really a bad person but you probably wouldn’t want to call him good either. He’s simply just Katou Yue; take it or leave it.
background. Born as the illegitimate child of an affair his mother had with another man, Katou’s childhood was hardly a pleasant one. His stepfather hated him from the moment he was born, bestowing the name Yue on him because it was a girl’s name and he sincerely hoped it would bring his stepson enough bad luck to kill him as fast as possible. Needless to say, growing up in a household with that man was certainly no picnic for Katou. His stepfather would almost constantly abuse both him and his mother for their treacheries, whilst his older sister Sae remained untouched and adored, causing Katou to be deeply resentful of her.
However, for most of his youth Katou lived unaware of the reasons behind his father’s hatred of him and his mother, and it was only by chance that he eventually found out, coming across a photograph of his mother entwined in the arms of another man-a man that was identical to him in every way. The truth was so distressing to Katou that he vowed to himself that he would never have children of his own and began to distance himself greatly from his family, turning into a drug-addicted delinquent in order to escape from his pain. Additionally, Katou’s resentment of his sister was only made worse when she let it slip many years later that she had known the truth all along and never said a thing to him about it. Katou was so upset by this that he tried to rape Sae to make her father hate her as much as he had always hated him. He didn’t succeed however, and instead distanced himself even further from his family-so much so that he didn’t go to his sister’s wedding, nor did he bother to visit his stepfather in hospital when he fell ill or attend the funeral when he later died.
As predicted by his friend-Sakuya Kira-at the time, Katou regretted all of this for the rest of his life.
synopsis. Katou is first introduced to the series as a drug-dealing senior at Setsuna’s school. He is friends with Sakuya Kira and is caught up in the plot of the story when he buys drugs from a mysterious blonde stranger who turns out to be the Inorganic Angel, Rosiel. The capsule he was given forces Katou to act as Rosiel’s puppet against his will, leading to him picking a fight with Setsuna (under Rosiel’s control) in order to awaken the Organic Angel, Alexiel’s powers that reside within him. In a brief moment of lucidity, Katou begs for Kira to help him however Rosiel is quick to squash his control and attacks Kira, leaving him for dead. Still in control of Katou’s body, Rosiel then decieves the slumbering Alexiel into attacking him in turn, only to leave the body as it dies, absolutely thrilled at having gotten innocent blood on the hands of the Organic Angel in this life too. Kira (now recovered from his wound) buries Katou in the school grounds, along with the evidence from their crime and his body is not discovered until several weeks later when a storm washes away the top layer of soil from his make-shift grave.
Despite his death as a mortal, Katou reappears several chapters later when Setsuna travels to Hades, the land of the dead, to retrieve Sara’s soul in hopes of bringing her back to life. As per an agreement with Enra-ô, a collective group of spirits that rule over Hades, Katou acts as a guide to Setsuna during their journey throughout the underworld, though he appears to have his own agenda for doing so as he was also hired by Enra-ô to test (and preferably kill) the Messiah-Setsuna-in order to ascend to Heaven. During the course of their journey however, Katou slowly comes to consider Setsuna a friend, so much so that he lays down his life not once but twice in a row to save his life and eventually defeat Enra-ô, allowing Setsuna to escape from Hades when he fails to find Sara’s soul there.
However, this is still not the end for Katou. After his third death, he is revived once again by the Angel of Death, Uriel, who gives him a new body made out of a plant-like substance. Due to the unstable nature of his new body, Katou gains the ability to change his appearance into that of someone else simply by concentrating on them. It is with this newfound ability that Katou is able to impersonate Setsuna whilst the real Messiah (now trapped in Alexiel’s body) is on a mission to rescue Kurai from Hell and steal his corpse right out from under Kira’s nose. As Setsuna, Katou provokes the angels of fire and wind, Michael and Raphael, down to Assiah (Earth) and with help from Uriel, convinces Raphael to heal Setsuna’s body so that his soul may return to it.
With Setsuna back in his own body and on his way to Heaven to rescue Sara again, Katou is left behind in Anagura with Kira and Kurai to look over their newfound hostage, Raziel. When Setsuna returns to Anagura depressed at having failed to rescue his sister, Katou and Kira quite literally beat some sense into him before returning to Heaven at his side to try and clean up all the mistakes the Messiah made during his previous visit. Once in Heaven, Katou is left behind with the rebel inventor Riette whilst Kira and Setsuna go on ahead to save their ally, Zaphkiel, from the horrible fate of having his wings-the very symbol of what it is to be an angel-cut from his body, which would result in a slow and agonising death. They fail to save Zaphkiel, however and all three of them return to Anagura once again.
Back in Anagura, however, things are not quite going to plan and the trio return just in time to catch Rosiel stealing the lifeless body of his twin sister, Alexiel. Setsuna immediately races off to fight him but before Katou can even consider following him, Kira punches him hard enough to knock him senseless, leaving him with his sword before chasing after Setsuna. Katou recovers and finds the pair just in time to see Rosiel attack Kira, punching his fist quite literally through his chest, breaking his body to pieces and causing far more damage than anyone could have possibly predicted. Kira’s body was actually the vessel that held the soul of the fallen angel, Lucifer, and with his death Hell itself begins to crumble.
In a desperate attempt to keep the universe in tact, the Seven Satans of Hell gather to quite literally propel Hell up into Heave so that they fuse together and overlap. Countless lives were lost during the collision and many others, Katou included, suffer different fates such as being thrown out of Anagura straight up into Heaven. The impact this has on Katou is quite severe, resulting in the total loss of his memories, which includes his own appearance! In desperation, Katou takes on the form of the first person he sees: a dying man who happens to be a commander in Heaven’s army. With his new face and identity, Katou takes the man’s place as a commander in the army for a number of days, all the while searching for some clue as to who he really is. Ironically, it is during a mission as the angel commander that Katou infiltrates a suspicious cargo ship and finds himself face to face with both Uriel and Setsuna, triggering the turn of his memories and allowing him to return to his original form. Setsuna, who is so overcome with emotion at seeing his friend alive, embraces him.
Their reunion is somewhat short-lived however, as Setsuna was in the middle of making an attack on the white mansion where the Prime Minister of Heaven, Sevotharte, resides. In order to make the attack a success, Katou takes on Setsuna’s appearance once again and with Uriel’s help, acts as a decoy so that the real Setsuna can infiltrate the mansion. When Rosiel’s own personal forces join in the impending battle, Katou races after Setsuna to the mansion and arrives just in time to confuse Rosiel’s masked companion, taking a blow for him and once again saving Setsuna’s life at the risk of his own. Of course, all hell breaks lose when the masked man is revealed to be none other than the demon lord, Lucifer. Setsuna and Katou are both paralysed with shock at seeing their former friend again (especially since he should be dead) and only just managed to escape from the mansion with their lives.
Rendered bedridden and useless by his latest wounds, Katou begins to obsess over his former friend, constantly finding himself questioning whether or not Lucifer intentionally cut him down despite the fact he retains all of Kira’s memories during his time as a human. His obsession very quickly turns into a desire to kill Lucifer because he feels that he has to, though before he even gets a chance to recover enough to put his plans into action, he is whisked away from canon and instead finds himself in another strange place-Nuadoria.
abilities. As far as skills go, Katou is first and foremost just a regular kid with a punk-ass attitude. He’s apt at holding his own in a fight (and in his former line of work, he’d have to be) and is more than likely proficient at using the typical kinds of weapons you’d expect to find in a gang environment.
After his second-technically third-death, Uriel fashions Katou a body out of plant matter that, due to its unstable nature, allows him to change his face into that of another simply by concentrating on it. The downside to this however, is that Katou must always be consciously aware of every part of himself in order to maintain his original appearance. In addition to receiving a new body, Katou was also fed one of the feathers from Setsuna's wings, giving him a set of three huge angel wings that allow him to pass himself off as both an angel and, if necessary, Setsuna’s double.
what are they bringing to nuadoria? The clothes on his back, half a pack of cigarettes, lighter, bandages, his katana (Shiranui) and a whole lot of attitude.
