Nice work, Finch. *heart* I can completely buy Harold's reaction to that. A word of appreciation from someone who at least partially understands... That's a very human need.
I wonder if, without Reese's, Harold would've eventually accepted Root's. Harold is at his essence a kind person, but how many deaths could he have watched, deaths the Machine, unfettered, would have prevented, before listening to the parts of himself that have always agreed with Root? Finding someone like Reese, I think, wasn't Harold first instinct; his first ideas were closer to Roots'. Reese might be his alternate plan, the way he proves to himself (he reassures himself) that people can be saved by people, that in a world of code and bad people there's also the possibility of heroes... they just need a bit of data, and he can help with that.

I think that maybe my very first slashy thoughts might have been musings on Legolas and Gimli, when I read LOTR so very long ago. Thank you again!
