Vidding tech: basic clipping method

Aug 20, 2006 18:16

Yes, okay, so the vidding with high-res source guide is just a little bit, um, complicated. As a kind of easier introduction, here is a highly simplified description of vidding using the clipping method -- IE, instead of converting entire episodes, you choose and convert individual clips. The problem with this is that you have to gather all your clips first before vidding (or interrupt vidding to grab clips as you go), but on the other hand, it uses a lot less disk space, and also may be simpler to understand.

Here's the basic process:
  1. Open up the episode (either downloaded or ripped from DVD) in VDubMod

  2. Go to Video/Compression... and choose HuffyUV (get this from the AMV App)

  3. Go to Streams/Stream List..., click on the audio stream, and hit Disable.

  4. For each clip:
    • find the clip you want and set the start and end points in Vdub (you can do this with the Home/End keys)
    • go to File/Save As... and save the clip.
This doesn't at all deal with resizing, fixing aspect ratios, using filters, frame rate, etc. But that's the basic process. Try that to get started with the tool, see how the clips work for you in your editing program, and then you can look at the AMV tech guide or my high-res post to get ideas for how you can fix any problems you run into.

ETA: adding Mac version from harriet_spy:

For newbie Mac vidder reference (which conveniently is about the level of my expertise), you can accomplish the same thing working with VOBs in MPEGStreamClip:

(0. Rip from DVD using MacTheKnife.)

1. Open file in MPEGStreamClip.

2. Create selection using I and O keys at your in and out points.

3. File:Export to QuickTime (which lets you kill the audio track under Sound) or File:Export to DV (which doesn't).
