My Media Library the Way I Want It

  • The media files are all stored in the Matroska container, obviously, unless that’s impossible. (If Matroska can’t be used but several other formats can be, I want the one that supports more of the tags that I use.)
  • Matroska’s native tagging mechanism is used with Matroska’s official tags.
  • The audio and video on my iPod touch are synchronized with the same media library manager/player that I normally use, automatically converting files on the fly when needed, trying to retain as much meta-information (i. e. tag contents) as possible in the process.
  • The media library manager/player that I use counts plays and does all the other things listed on my About Me page.
  • I carefully set all applicable tags from Matroska’s official tag list. :-P Of course, I can also easily view them whenever I need or want to look up the respective information.
  • All tags are set in their original languages and writing systems.
  • I don’t know why the official tag page doesn’t require time tags to be in UTC, but I store them in UTC.
  • The media library manager/player that I use has all the good features of iTunes (like incremental search and the column chooser) and many good features that iTunes lacks.

P. S. Matroska’s tagging mechanism sure tempts to put the whole media library in one large file.
