(For the introductory paragraph, location and music, see the next entry.)

The Language A1 programme is primarily a pre-university course in literature. It is aimed at students who intend to pursue literature, or related studies, at university, as well as at students whose formal study of literature will not continue beyond this level. The former would normally follow the Higher Level (HL) programme and the latter the Standard Level (SL).

Every IB Diploma student at Riga State Gymnasium #1 is required to take Latvian A1 at the Higher Level. Even those whose mother tongue is Russian. Even those who take English A1 SL. Even those whose mother tongue is Russian and who take Russian A1 SL. Hell, even those whose mother tongue is Russian and who take Russian A1 SL and English A1 SL! (And for that matter, at the same time also French B, German B and Business & Management for the extra certificate.)
