Anthony Minghella, whose name over the last decade has become synonymous with a particular variety of high-toned, quality cinema, died unexpectedly Tuesday at age 54 in London. The writer-director of "The English Patient" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" had been operated on earlier in the week for cancer of the neck and tonsils and had been expected to recover. But he developed a hemorrhage that doctors couldn't stop, and he died in the prime of his career. [
