Random: A Sporking, part I

Welcome, welcome, all of you lost souls. Join me for an evening of creepy tales of woe.

I wanted to do another sporking, and it was either this novel, or one that I actually like. But failte_aoife and nessaniel insisted I do this one first:

This entry is the first of many to spork a novel that is actually Hornblower (TV!canon) slash fic with the serial numbers ( Read more... )

sporking, books, fandom: hornblower, wtf stuff, review-ish, age of sail

I only read excerpts of the fic version to compare the character's backstories, but I don't think a lot of it had been subjected to a re-write before being published. And yeah, the stolen dialogue is the worst! Think about P2P fanfic what you like, but outright plagiarism IS unethical.

I suddenly got warflashbacks to the movie!Malfoys, don't ask why
*lol* XD

Yup, the length surely would have made it quite a famous fic. And 2000 was still the early days of fandom for Hornblower.

But dear God, fandom, calm down, there is more to him than the fact that his butt has a hole to insert things into. DDDx

ahahahahahaha! XD You hit the nail on the head though. Fanon!Archie's problem isn't, that he gets sexually abused (which you can very well argue is basically canon), fanon!Archie's problem is, that this too often ends up his only purpose. Aaand if that is also the defining feature of his character that gets transported into modern AU's, um, that definitely sucks. D:

Like, the bit about the coffe-shop AU is actually news to me. O___O

HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU SURVIVE THAT. XDDDDDD
The only answer to that one is "it got worse". And once I had found that this used to be Hornblower fic my curiosity got the better of me.

(There is a really popular fic in classic Who fandom that still gets recced on occasion that is basically like this novel, but even more ridiculous (the bad guy, the ruler of a planet, is shown to be evil by raising taxes, for fuck's sake!). One half of the pairing was basically my favourite character, but by the end of it I wanted him to die, gruesomely. The abused couple spend the whole time crying and pining and sulking and resigning to their fates. That one was pure agony! This novel at least has Smith and Will DO something about their situation. XD)

Still, you understand why people on tumblr reccing Ransom as the best fic Hornblower fandom has to offer makes me want to scream?
