I was recently phoned by a friend of mine (at an unusual hour, no less), and had one of the more surreal conversations I've had in a good while. It didn't have anything to do with the actual content of our conversation (which was as mundane as ever), but rather with the fact that there seemed to be some sort of time-delay in effect. It's not like she lives in Nunavut or something. She's virtually down the street in another part of Waterloo. And yet there was at least a ten-second pause in between what I would say and what she would hear. As you can imagine, it was pretty disconcerting. At first, I just assumed that she was in the middle of doing something else (probably because I was, too), but then I made a really killer joke and it took her a couple of seconds to start laughing. That was when I noticed something weird was going on, because usually a) I'm really funny and b) she's pretty smart. Long-story short, it was fucking weird. I'm really not too good with three- (or is it four-?) dimensional problems, but something strange was definitely going on. Perhaps some sort of localized time dilation caused by the proximity of a black hole. Yeah, I'm sure that was it.
