The Montgomery County police and I have a special relationship.

On April 17, my Cobalt passed its Maryland state safety inspection with a few hiccups. Not even two weeks later, both brake lights go kaput. I didn't realize this (how are you supposed to realize that your brake lights are out?), but a Montgomery County police officer was kind enough to follow me almost the whole way home from work (thereby giving me heart palpitations) before pulling me over to inform me. I scooted into an apartment complex parking lot when he turned his flashers on, and nary a minute later TWO other cop cars showed up and surrounded me.

Okay, Montgomery County police. I realize that functional brake lights are pretty important and everything, but is it really necessary to bring in THREE cop cars to deal with me? There aren't other, more dangerous or destructive criminals you could be tracking down? Or perhaps speeders you could be slapping with fines?

So, I was properly schooled and me and my broken brake lights went on our way. This morning, however, as I was driving down Veirs Mill to work, who should happen to cruise in behind me but a cop car. The cop proceeds to follow me and, in nearly the exact same spot, puts on his flashers. Surprise, surprise--my brake lights are still out! It's unfortunate how they don't fix themselves overnight...

Apparently the Montgomery County police are using their broken-brake-light ESP to literally look out for me. They're probably sitting there in their headquarters, eating turkey sandwiches and downing coffee, until one of them leaps up and declares, "I sense a silver Cobalt is wandering around with no brake lights! Dispatch, officers! Dispatch now!"

I have an appointment with a Chevy dealer tomorrow morning. I am crossing every appendage I own that Montgomery County will leave me alone until then.
