these connections

we are all connected to this
this landscape
this molding of earth upon moss
upon rock upon detritus

underneath asphalt
and homes and
schools
and work
underneath cars
we are connected to this

there are landscapes that eat landscapes
consuming landscapes
and we are connected to the one
beneath all of that.

these memories eat memories
a two lane road over
a deer run

there will be a landscape upon this one
where our feet are so firmly planted
in a deep rootedness that is there
even though we’ve forgotten it

and there is a landscape inside of us
underneath our skin
inside what lies underneath our skin

and this landscape speaks a language
a language of body upon body
upon the ground
a language of hands along bark
along rock among water
where a deep rootedness is planted
a rootedness that is there
even though we’ve forgotten it

there is this connection through disease
and through laughing
this shared tragedy
even if we refuse its there

it connects us
is consumed and is
consuming us
these connections in the water in the soil
in the air
they stick to our thoughts to our lungs
to our mouths
tying us ever closer together

and beneath these knots
there is a deep rootedness
holding us together
just remember this.
