I want to start off by saying that I think my pastor, Erwin Lutzer, is a great man. He is a renowned scholar, having authored several books...a few of which I read. He is also a very inspiring speaker and just an all out charasmatic guy. I enjoy hearing his viewpoints and teachings and I think there is a lot of credibility to what he says. And I can also add that hes a fellow Canadian, which is also cool.
hahaha I just noticed that a lot of my blogs begin with disclaimers. I wonder if thats good or bad...
ANYWAYS, that being said, I will declare that lately there have been some things he said that have annoyed/offended me.
Firstly was the Halloween thing. But I'm not AS annoyed with it anymore because it was clarified what my church actually "believes" about Halloween: its okay to dress up and yada yada as long as you dont dress up as a witch or ghost or vampire or anything like that. Fairy Princesses are okay, as are football players and cowboys...etc.
Okay thats cool, but upon hearing that I can only assume that my church discourages the reading of the Harry Potter books and other such forms of entertainment that describe magic and the like. That annoys me too, but thats me just making an assumption so who knows....
The second and most important thing said by my pastor that annoyed and offended me is this:
At Sunday's service (yesterday) he said he had comments about the election. I anxiously awaited them because I was kind of curious as to what he would say. I figured since he has a large congregation he would remain pretty neutral and adhere to the diverse viewpoints.
Apparently there arent very many diverse viewpoints in my church...
So Dr. Lutzer goes on to say that biblical issues should take priority over other issues such as healthcare or the economy. He asked if we would really like a president who would pass legislation for gays to marry, or a president who would make it possible for a teen girl to have an abortion without having to tell her parents. Some people shouted "no, we wouldnt!" I wanted to shout "yes we would!" (aside from the teenage abortion part) but I think that would put a strange spin on the phrase "you're preaching to the choir"...since, ya know, I sing in the choir.
So anyway, Lutzer indirectly said "vote for McCain!" and I also heard (in my mind) that we should be single issue voters for the sake of religion. Hmmm. Whatever happened to the whole Seperation of Church and State thing? I also found it weird that he didnt mention the war as something we should consider when voting...
Anyways. I was kind of shocked and slightly offended because I think your pastor is overstepping his boundaries when he kind of tells you who to vote for...even if it was indirectly.
I still love you though, Dr Lutzer! But part of me questions whether I really fit in to your church...I have yet to have a conversation with anyone at the church who claims to be liberal, or even moderate... so I'm feeling slightly outnumbered. Then again, no one really outright says what they believe so who knows.
Again...all that was said was simply a matter of opinion and not meant to offend or insult anyone.
