The way it all started, it was back in 2008 when we were freely chatting about creating our own subbing team. It was spontaneous, and at that time, it felt like the best thing to do.
I am a self proclaimed IT baka, and I still am now, so I volunteered to gather some of my friends together, and ask them if they want to be in the team. Some were very eager, some were not so eager; subbing is all about personal choice, that was what I learnt first and foremost.
We started out with subbing the AU CM. OMG, we were all excited by just subbing a CM!!! But for everyone who just started something new, the feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming.
Along the way, some members decided to quit because they do not have any things to sub, or they were getting too busy with personal lives. The next thing that I learnt was whether I like it or not, I need to have a permanent translator if I want to keep the team going.
And then Arashian.com went into hiatus. That was hard to deal with. I had no idea how to keep the team going. Until a friend pointed out to me 'Why don't you make a recruitment post?' Up until then, all I was thinking was to have a subbing team for Arashian members by Arashian members. But since the forum was down, I was left with no choice but to expand. And I think we did the right choice.
Still, along the way, some people went MIA due to lack of stuff to sub, or rather, lack of translators. There were miscommunication here and there, but I think the next thing that I learnt was as long as I keep searching for what the team needs, everything can go as smooth as it can.
There were times when people from UAE and France PMed us and asked if they can resubbed our clips into their languages. We were so happy, more fans want to know about Arashi and it's good! We hope that these teams still exist now to spread the Arashi love ^^
So why AST is important to me?
Despite all the hardships, and my lack of knowledge in terms of subbing *I'm still not a pro* AST is important to me because it marks the beginning of a whole new me in Arashi fandom. It shows to me the good and bad sides of the fansubbing world, as well as the fandom as a whole. Through AST, I managed to appreciate individuality, as well as teamwork on a new level. I learnt how to accept people, despite our differences, and how to deal with comments, remarks, friends, and foes.
My goal when I joined AST was very simple. I want to contribute to the team by making its members worry-free and for them to be able to enjoy subbing Arashi clips, in a team. As long as they can sub Arashi clips happily, I consider my goal achieved ^^
Most important of all, AST is very important to me because it made me a better person, and I am able to help Arashi create a storm throughout the world.
