☆ DAY FIVE ☆
New York, 194X... _
This time, I wake to the smell of smoke and the sounds of shouting.
I jump to my feet and run into the hall, only to run right into MUGS and BOO, who are dashing toward the bathroom with buckets from the storage closet in their hands. "Get PELLY!" they both shout at me, turning and running down the hall. "Get PELLY and HELP us!"
It takes a minute for it all to sink in and for what I'm seeing at the end of the hall to form a connection that means anything in my head. But when it clicks, I take off down the hall in the other direction, banging on PELLY's door and starting to shout, myself.
"PELLY! Get up! It's JILL's room! It's on fire!"
The door swings open on the third knock and PELLY stands there, wide-eyed and confused, until I point down the hall toward where the flames are flickering out from beneath JILL's door. PELLY's expression freezes in understanding as MUGS and BOO run past again, and she grabs the basin on the table in her room, running for the bathroom, too. I join her, carrying as many wet towels as I can hold, smothering the flames that have begun to creep over the carpet of the hall.
"JILL!" BOO calls, shouting over the roar of the flames. "JILL, wake up!"
"It's okay! I'm right here," JILL says nervously from where she's poked her head out of the closet she'd found herself yesterday night. We all whirl around, squinting through the smoke - but it's JILL all right, looking not too much worse for the wear. "I thought I should change rooms after yesterday," she says, then looks nervously toward the burning room. "And - somebody left a note! That I should definitely switch..."
We all look at each other, not sure what this means - or whether or not to even believe JILL - until I blink, wipe my face, and interrupt. "We can talk about this later, we've got to put that fire out before the whole house burns down."
And I grab one of MUGS's buckets and turn back toward the bathroom again for more water, and I swear I catch someone reply, but I can't tell who.
"What difference would that make?"
Maybe none...
