I didn't have a good feeling about Christmas this year. Zero Christmas spirit, to be honest. I'll mostly blame the weather; it's unseasonably warm, and me don't like. But anywhoo, while I still have trouble coming to terms with the fact that Christmas did in fact happen, it was a good one. Now, y'all should know by now how incredibly stupid I am at times, and ignorance is bliss, and that's what made Christmas Eve so awesome. See, I'd forgotten what I'd put on my wishlist, so every present I opened came as a major surprise! Plus, there were two gifts that day that were completely unexpected, and those were - by far - the best ones. I dare say best ones ever. Keep in mind that this was my 22nd Christmas.
That's what Grandma said when my oldest cousin kept reading my name on the presents. I think Malin and I got about the same amount. Call me evil (hey, evil never rests, not even at Christmas), but the slightly sour look on my cousins' faces made me even more cheerful. Cause they didn't get that many presents (we have such different upbringings, it's crazy! They always wish for money cause they have to buy basically everything they want, while at the same time, the things they really want to wish for are rudely expensive. My sister and I have been raised to set limits and would never in our wildest dreams think to wish for expensive gadgets.) It also made me kind of happy to see my aunt looking awkwardly as my sister and I opened our many presents. It's now been two years since she decided we're too old for gifts. That in itself is rude to me, because I'm four years younger than Malin. But the main problem is that she never told us this. You heard me. Grandma told us, and she said our aunt would probably let us know soon. Yeah, two years ago... And I don't see why we can't at least get a card?! It's just bad taste. Really bad taste.
So anyway, here's what I got:
Although I've had a long, long love affair with television, I have very few series on DVD. It's really just TBBT and The Middle. Oh, and my sister and I worked very hard to record [almost] every episode of Renford Rejects on tape.
Since school forced me to read lots of classics, I realized they're not so bad. So I thought I'd give this one a try.
The thickness of this freaked me out (it's a play, it should be tiny!) but then I discovered that it's packed with other crap, such as essays and explanations (which I will ignore because they are often condescending towards the reader).
This is written in Norwegian. It's about the Utøya massacre this summer. The girl on the front wrote it with her dad - she was on the island, he was not. The title means "I'm alive, Dad."
Ellen... Need I say more?
This excited the nerd in me (again, I blame school...). Not only am I a sucker for Christmas stories, but wait until you look inside...
No, I did not doodle that. Mom had gotten it all wrong, and told me these were Charles Dickens' personal notes. Not the case (I would have DIED if that were true), but I just love books that look read. From what I've gathered, this is a reprint of the five Christmas Books from before 1923. The stamps in the book reveal that it's originally from the University of California. Now I have no idea who these people are that doodled in my book, but it still makes me happy. There's like a connection, you know? Yeah, I'm weird like that.
Here's surprise present number one (actually number two, but you wouldn't have known that, had I not just told you). It's from my sister. We never buy presents for each other, so it really came as a shock when my cousin read the label. "To Sarah from Malin." "And Mom and Dad and Bilbo too, right...?" "No, just Malin." I opened the smallest one first: the comb. And then I just looked over at the two others, still waiting to be unwrapped, and realized what was going on. See, in Sweden, we have something called a Christmas Calendar. It's a tv-series in 24 episodes, one airing each day until Christmas (we celebrate on Christmas Eve). And in 1991, the Calendar was "Sunes Jul" ("Sune's Christmas"). It's a classic, everyone knows it. Even though I do remember bits and pieces of the original (I was only two at the time), we have the whole thing on tape. So I've seen it many times. Now, this present refers to the best episode of them all - "Pulkapappa" ("Sled Dad") - where Håkan - the youngest in the family - complains when his mom serves him a cup of tea. He goes "But I want chocolate, I want chocolaaaate!" His mom can't stand the whining, so she takes two pieces of the chocolate bar and puts into the mugg. And then she stirs with a red comb. Weird? Yeah, but awesome!
Oh, yes I did! It wasn't all that bad... Better than regular tea, but then again, I hate tea. I texted Fredrik to share the awesomeness, and what was the reply I got? "Are you drunk?!" Nope, not even a little. (A special shout out to
so_damn_blue who helped my sister with the details)
I'd meant to post this earlier, but I forgot... But yeah, got this book too.
First of all, if you can read the top lines of the note: No, that is not how you spell my name in Swedish :p It's still Sarah, regardless of what language you use. So, this is the crème de la crème. It was the first present I opened - in the morning, actually - and maybe that's what set the mood for the rest of the day? My dear
soul_bird got me this. It's her own book (no, not as in "She wrote it"), with her own comments in it (yes, doodling!). She's the one who got me into astrology in the first place so it's an excellent gift - but completely unexpected. Also, it helps that I am one of the biggest nerds around, so again, the doodling is awesome, and the fact that you can see it's a book that's been read many times. But the main thing that makes it so special is that I've always considered giving someone a book - especially if it's YOUR book - is like giving a piece of yourself. So this really means a lot. I think this really is the best present I've ever gotten.
In other news: I started knitting a scarf last night. Might post progress photos every now and then. Depends on if I lazy out or not.
OH! And although no one cares about handball, I find this fascinating: Last night, the game between Guif and H43 ended in 45-32!!! That's gotta be some sort of record!!! Now I've seen points reaching over 40 before (usually against Australia, sorry...) but then the other team's score is usually below 20.
