Taunted Beowulf
Unferths taunt in an attempt to devastate Beowulfs character backfires, and only builds his reputation.
Unfurth wants to spoil Beowulfs immodest boasting by insulting and degrading his past adventures. This could have easily destroyed Beowulfs demeanor to the Danes, but Beowulf Quickly responds to Unfurths slander by one: diminishing Unfurths reliability by implying he is drunk and jelious; two: Beowulf manages to explain his reasoning and make himself the heroic figure that will save the day by explaining, though he lost the race, he killed all of the sea monsters and made the seas safe for sailors.
Beowulf is seen as a strong, passionate, and heroic character who will save the Danes from the evil Grendel.
