Does it make me a bad person...

...that I really want to see the film version of Mamma Mia? From what I hear, the stage version did really well in London, the cast is great and the scenery is gorgeous (or is that "the cast is gorgeous and the scenery is great"?), and I will grudgingly admit to liking Abba in the wayback. We saw another trailer at the theater this past weekend, and it looked like a whole lotta fun.

We actually saw two movies this weekend: Vantage Point and Leatherheads. I really enjoyed Vantage Point - it features a thrilling high-speed car chase through the scarily narrow streets of Salamanca and a great explosion, which the filmmakers got a lot of mileage out of by rewinding several times and showing the same events through different eyes. Actually worked pretty well, and the cast, headed by Dennis Quaid and Forest Whitaker, carried it off well. Fun, even though I figured out who the mole was pretty early on.

Leatherheads was also fun, although it dragged a bit in places. It probably would have been better if it had been edited to an hour and a half instead of 2 hours. George Clooney really works well in these period comedy parts - it's like he's the love-child of Clark Gable and Cary Grant. Renee Zellweger is fun as the tough-talking Intrepid Girl Reporter, and the pair of them spout their Capra-esque dialogue with a lot of charm. Not a terrible way to spend a couple of hours on a grey afternoon.

Other movies I'm waiting for: Smart People, Iron Man, The Forbidden Kingdom, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and Speed Racer. Having actually *read* The Ruins, I think I'll skip the film - I figure the movie will be even sketchier on characterization, and longer on nasty ways to die, than the novel.  I don't mind blood and violence in my mindless entertainment, but lack of plot and characterization leaves me cold.

Ooh, I almost forgot to mention Hellboy II: The Golden Army, due out in July.  Yay, Ron Perlman in heavy prosthetic makeup!
