Thinking Olympics London 2012

I've been a bit obsessed recently with Olympics watching on TV. I don't watch a lot of sport on TV probably because most of it is screened at inconvenient times for me and I mostly like gymnastics so that isn't going to be on as much as football for instance - obviously!

I've really enjoyed watching the Olympics. I wasn't too bothered either way about it being hosted in London or by Great Britain. thought is was all a waste of resources and wasn't too excited about the passage of the Olympic torch - it came near here at least twice on its journey up and down.

What I think has made this more interesting as an Olympics is the coverage of UK athletes and the fact that the timeline is the same so we don't need to consider getting up at 3am to watch "one of ours" compete. Usually there's a lot of TV footage of other nations which is great because that's what an Olympics is about but UK participants are not always the focus and it's too easy to not bother watching. I've LOVED seeing so many of our sporty people doing their sporty thing whether or not they were likely to gain a medal. It does really make you realise - me realise - that we have a lot of talent in the UK and to see it all at once is wonderful.

I was also thinking that it really is inspiring to young people to see participants like themselves doing so well. When I was into gymnastics, millions of years ago, I loved watching it on TV but it seemed that to actually get anywhere in the sport you had to be Russian or Czechoslovakian or similar. I would have been so inspired to have seen the current batch of UK gymnasts and if I weren't so past it now I'd be joining the queue for the nearest gym to get back on those a-symetric bars or the beam which I loved.

So it's all good and hope everyone has a great time at the closing ceremony this evening. AND .... don't forget that in a very short time the paralympics are up and running and if anything, those athletes are even more of an inspiration.
