Good Reads about Good People
I've been reading a bit more than usual and need to share some thoughts about a fabulous book given to me (THANK YOU xx) by fjm. I'm often nervous of books other people tell me is truly great because in some way I imagine I won't "get it" or won't find it such a mind blowing experience as I should - but that's just me!
This is The Good People by Steve Cockayne. For those you like a short, sharp synopsis here you are:

This book really surprised me. It started a little slowly as I often find books do but not slowly in a way that made me disinterested. Now I've finished it, this wasn't so much a slow start as a brooding build-up. The writing is so fluid and readable the reader is lulled along enjoying this happy story of a young family at the start of the Second World War.
I was expecting picnics with seersucker tablecloths and lashing of ginger beer, it was almost the Famous Five all over again; and then it wasn't. I started to think this was going to be a simple story about growing up and boys and girls and awkward moments but it was a lot more than this and then it turned dark.
I grew up with summers full of terrain very similar to that described with a "den" that we built beside a sort of wild pond surrounded by willows and elders and frogs and worms and wonderful smells of greenery. We had our own paths around this wilderness and acted our own dramas for hours and hours and days on end. So many little things I had forgotten have come back to me through The Good People and the images in my head are crystal clear. I've tried to find my "best" friend on Facebook and other places but she is hard to track down. It has, however, made me realise just how deeply such life events embed themselves in our minds and that is key to this book too.
This book will take a few readings before it gets "old" and I'm going to send it on a journey to other readers!
