Kushiel´s dart reads very well,

it is very interesting, very thrilling, elaborate and twisting plot. I am looking forward to reading the next book of the series.

I tried to guess which places in the book are which places in real world:-) Albion is Alba, Serenissima is Venetia...
Carey created a world, a pastiche of our world:-)))) It is a historical novel (but from a wordld that doesnt exist) or an adventurous novel. It is not an erotic novel, there is too little of this in it, it is not a bdsm novel, even though the main character earns her living for a part of this novel as a courtesan that specializes in BDSM:-))) It really captures your attention if you try to read it and have a little more patience (than you expected that you will need) at the beginning.

I have just watched Koření života/No reservations but the Czech title is better:-)
Spices of life. Love, good food and music (Italian opera), in French cuisine the three main things are butter, butter, butter, Nick is an opera fan and a cook, a vice chef in a restaurant, where Kate is the chef of the cuisine,  Nick listens to arias in the restaurant kitchen such as Nessun dorma, something from Gioconda (i mean the famous tenor aria from la  gioconda), La donna e mobile, Celeste Aida and I may have forgotten something. (and he listen to sopranos too :-) in the film , but i don´t specialize in sopranos :-)) ). The choice of arias is quite funny? was it intention? when nick teases kate and she doesnt want to work with him (when they meet), you hear nessun dorma (the tenor sings he will win in the morning, he will win the love of a cruel and unhappy princess:-))) something like Kate in fact-why is her name Kate? Taming of the Shrew rings the bell. Is it coincidence or intention or inspiration, if only unconscious? NIck loves everything italian and Petruccio and Kate were Italians:-) Does Nick tame his Kate? Maybe a little but he is far more gentle with than Petruccio with his shrew). and  la donna e mobile, in similar situation. when they drink wine, they listen to libiamo. When she comes to ask him to forgive her, he listens to Celeste Aida.
Great Aaron Eckhart, great little Zoe, I didnt always like Zeta Jones in this film, mainly so stiff and cold (but: was it intentional? maybe),almost always the same facial expression, but she is beautiful. Kate may be a very bitter character so Zeta Jones may have had  to play her like a very bitter person, embittered even before her sister died in a traffic accident. She lived only for work which is nonsense, as i know now.  She is such an ice queen, but she might have good reasons for it.
I liked the ending. I don´t  understand why it got only 58% on ČSFD.I don´t know. It was not perfect, but it was a good try attempt to do a romantic film. I was excited to see the interaction  between boss/chef Kate and vice chef/subaltern Nick and Aaron Eckhart is very sexy and you can easily believe he wins Kate very quickly even if she is his boss who takes her position and work very seriously and doesnt want to lose it whatever else she may sacrifice (at the beginning, in the end both know what is more important and they understand they both want to be bosses-in their own restaurant - zoe´s nick´s kate´s). Nick was such a nice person. almost too nice but i think it was appropriate, he loves so many things and so he can so easily forgive to people he loves. Why do people so underestimate positive films?
it was a good romance, good for its kind of films. It may not be evaluated as a good artistic film, or a good kungfu action film for that matter, but as a romance it did deserve more than 58%.
