Local Autism Groups

Briefly, 11 years ago, I was just finding out about autism/aspergers and was awaiting diagnosis. (I am now 50+). Myself and partner were living in Norwich, we still live in Norfolk. We found the local Asperger Norfolk group, it seems still to be run by and for those living in Norwich, unless you have your own transport as there is still no help to ( Read more... )

Have you explained it to them in writing or something? That would be my first thing, after a bit of a small episode of decompensation and anger, that is. I don't know if you have the ability to communicate more effectively via text versus speech, so I'm just throwing out an idea.

I can't comment on any AS groups experience, because there simply aren't any for adults in my area. It's like as soon as you're an adult here in NY state, you no longer HAVE the disorder, but a "history of" instead, which makes getting a diagnosis in your late 30s essentially one of those really rare things, and then there's no support at all; and the local welfare depts decide that messing with you on a monthly if not weekly basis is acceptable, and just pop popcorn and watch when you decompensate.

I wish there was an AS group around here. I'm a member of GRASP but that's about it; most of their things are in New York City, a 6-7 hour drive from my location.

Oh, call me Red - I'm just using the name of one of my heroes. (I'm also female).

So this is the UK? I think the UK might be different from the US in how they handle things.

Nah, I have terrible speaking skills and I don't own a cell; and lately my communication via the written word isn't that good anyway.

Decompensation is one of those things some people call a meltdown. I call it decompensating because I am no longer going to compensate for NTs inability to understand, so I have a bit of a hissy fit.

Ah, just looked up Asperger United. Seems of rather limited usefulness, but you never know.
