I'm definitely more of an armchair professor than philosopher, but I do agree that ASDs are underdiagnosed in women, and that it's harmful. There is an extremely high incidence of women with Asperger's with severe eating disorders - they notice that people are nicer to them when they're thinner, begin dieting, and their enhanced attention to detail and obsessiveness fuels the disorder.

THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD. Right down to the diagnosis - by a friend, at that point, not a pro - being a point of liberation & the start of my better understanding myself (and discovering this LJ community!).

Ahh, I totally get the "clinging to one best friend" part- I have always had a decent number of friends (I think), but through all of that I have always had one girl out of that group that I consider my "best" friend. This hasn't been the same girl, as I've moved a couple times (to different schools and different states) but I always fall into that pattern.

I did have one best friend at primary school, but my family moved from one country to another when I was aged 3, 8, and 15 - effectively uprooting me from any close friends - it was very traumatic indeed.

That apart, yes, this was my childhood. Trying so hard to fit in, to please people, to 'do the right thing', and always, always not QUITE managing it.
