The Final ThinkGeek Update

Apr 13, 2011 15:00

When I saw that luminousmotion's concerns about Autism Speaks had been forwarded to ThinkGeek's PR department, I figured the best course of action would be to get in touch with the PR department directly-that would be shane@thinkgeek.com. I sent a short email this morning (to the effect of: Autism Speaks does not help autistic people, try the ASAN instead), and just got this response in my inbox now. I also received an unsolicited email from another woman who seems to be in charge of their web presence. They're nothing if not prompt!

Hi Katherine!

Thanks a ton for bringing this to our attention. I actually don't really do much with the blog at all, so I'm not sure what sort of feedback we've received at this point. This is definitely good info to have, and I'll make certain that the creative minds behind the blog get to check it out.

At this point, it might be a bit too late in the month for us to suddenly change it, since I'm sure something has already been worked out with Autism Speaks, but it's absolutely something to consider for the future. We obviously want the support to go to the people who are doing the best work!

Again, thanks a million for letting us know about this!!

Best,
Shane

Katherine,

We've learned a lot in the last week about different organizations working on autism issues. It was a crash course, to be sure, but we're glad we're hearing from customers like you and really do appreciate the time you took to email us!

You are not alone in suggesting ASAN; we're looking into what we can do for them in the near future. And we'll definitely try to toss this out to as many as our readers, followers, and customers as we can before we donate again--you guys are the experts on this, not us, and we should have asked for feedback earlier in the process.

Thanks again for getting in touch, and I hope we'll hear from you later when we revisit autism giving!

Best,

Carrie
