One thing I'll never understand about NTs is how they sometimes get stuck in a communications loop, especially on the phone. Here's an example that just happened. (I work at the Information Desk at a public library.)
NT: I just got a call that you're holding a book for me, can you make sure it's there?
Me: (after checking hold shelf) Yes ma'am, I have the book here in my hand. We'll hold it thru the 12th.
NT: Okay, I just wanted to know if the book was there.
Me: Yes ma'am, the book is here, and we'll hold it thru the 12th.
NT: Okay. I just got the call today, and I wanted to make sure the book was there.
Me: Yes ma'am, the book is right in front of me, and you can pick it up anytime between now and the 12th.
NT: (getting annoyed) Well I JUST wanted to find out if the book was being held for me.
ME: Yes ma'am, the book is right here. Would you like me to get someone else to verify that for you?
NT: (slams phone down)
This happens two or three times a month, not always with hold books...but always the same pattern. NT asks a question, I give an answer, NT repeats the question, I give the answer again, and this goes on until either the NT goes away in a huff, or until she (it's usually women) complains to the boss about how "rude" I am.
Can anybody shed any light?
