So, I'm pondering graduate school options and have stumbled across an interesting option to finance my education and do some good work building Autistic community - being a residential assistant with a specific focus, if I can talk Residential Life into it. I have often expressed frustration at the lack of knowledge of autism issues on the part of ResLife and Disability Support Services at my college and I think it would be interesting to see if I could create a floor of a dorm that would be specifically oriented at being accepting of Autistic students and perhaps students with other social communication issues. I wouldn't want to create a segregated environment though, as students on the spectrum should be entitled to feel welcome at all parts of the campus. I think a floor open to everyone but perhaps specially geared towards students on the spectrum - maybe with a neurodiversity theme also recognizing other neurological differences - might be very valuable. What do people think? For those of you who are or who have been in a college dorm, what do you wish was different? What would people like to see? Could people maybe share their positive and negative experiences around this? And how should I go about ensuring, if I can get ResLife to agree, that this is an inclusive rather than a segregated project?
Feel free to answer all or only some of the questions - I know there's a lot. First and foremost, I want people's viewpoints.
