I have a friend who is pretty much non-verbal. Her grandparents have been advised to start on on Facilitated Communication because she has problems finding PECS.
She types fine, other than a few grammer problems that are no real impairment to comprehension, at least not for me. We have chatted every night for the past 3 years for at least an hour, often more.
However, she can't seem to do this with people in the same room with her, if she knows they are going to see what she says. She says she has no idea why. She says she just shuts down and can't think.
I think it's more social anxiety and rather like a panic attack. She's paralyzed and gets really confused often when trying to communicate with people in the same room with her, even family members.
Hence, the FC.
However, she hates being touched. Maybe they just want to use the pictograph software?
What are some of the names of some of the pictograph software computer programs used for FC? I was wondering if I could get one for my son to use. They did try him on FC in his school but no one would give me the program's name to use at home.
I know some of you have used FC programs and I hope that you can help me with this problem.
Also give me some insight if you have experienced problems like my friend has. Is there some way to overcome this severe anxiety she has when she tries to communicate to someone who is in the same room with her? I feel silly being 2500 miles away and having to email her grandmother to tell her that her grandaughter is injured and she needs help, whens the woman is sitting a few feet away from her granddaughter and my friend just cannot bring herself to even type a message about it and show it to her.
Thanks ot all who reply.
