I was walking home today when I spotted a cell phone in the snow. It had obviously been dropped recently, but there was no one else visible on the street. I didn't want it to get screwed up by melting snow, so I picked it up and brought it home with me. There is no identifying personal information on the phone. I'm guessing from text messages that the owner is a teenager, but other than that all I know is that they like Family Guy. Which leaves me in the position of having to call my way through their phone book. So on the one hand, we have the Aspie tendency to need to do the right thing, but on the other we have the Aspie terror of talking to strangers on the phone. There aren't even any "Mom" or "Dad" entries that might be easier.
I ended up sending an SMS to the last person to have sent an SMS to the phone asking them to get the owner to call it, and I put up signs around the spot where I found it, but I have to admit there's a part of me that wants to just put it in a ziplock bag and put it back where I found it. If this hasn't been resolved by tomorrow I'm taking it to the Cricket store (it's a Cricket phone) and seeing if they have any way of getting it back to the owner.
ETA: The phone is back with its owner. The person I texted ended up being the owner's big sister, who told me which house on our block to drop it off at.
