I have had severe tactile defensiveness and other sensory issues all my life. While these are recognized to occur commonly in conjunction with ASDs and other neurological issues, I have had a lot of trouble finding understanding or support from a doctor or a counselor I saw last year.
What I would like to know is whether anyone here might have any misc. help or information, such as a support group you know of, a treatment you know of, if there are any studies on the effectiveness of the kinds of techniques occupational therapists use with children, or other coping possibilities. There are some sites out there promoting awareness of this problem in children under the terms Sensory Integration Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder, but these are not medically recognised and I cannot find acknowledgement or help for adults.
Out of all the issues of having AS this is the particular one that makes some days truly difficult. I am married so it is a problem there too.
