Vitamin D?

Sep 13, 2008 14:32

I have heard that women with vitamin D deficiency, are prone to give birth to children with autism. Apparently in Europe, none-European immigrants are more likely to have autistic children then the average European, and it has been suggested that that’s because of lack of vitamin D. See most of them have dark skin that needs more sunlight to produce D-vitamin, plus many none-European immigrants are muslims, muslim women (often) covers much of their body thus getting very little sunlight.

Sure if none-Europeans in Europe have a high frequency of autism, the above sounds like a reasonable explanation, but sounding reasonable isn’t the same thing as fact, I think a little scepticism can be healthy. Perhaps people in the autism spectrum are more likely to move to Europe. Probably not, I just let my thoughts drift away. Anyway what do you think about the “vitamin D theory”? Anyone who know more about it?

Then if I let my thoughts drift, if that theory become well know pregnant women might start to eat more with vitamin D in it, companies might start to advertising vitamin D pills to pregnant women, and what effect will that have? Maybe an OD on vitamin D is worse then autism.
