how much did it cost you to get diagnosed?

i contacted a therapist whose rates are approx $100/hr. he's had experience with and diagnosing people with asperger's, and said he's worked with people who have capd, but it's not his specialty. (he's the president of a san bay area therapy community (gaylesta) for people in the glbt community). i asked a bunch of questions (reason why i'm ( Read more... )

I was diagnosed within ADD assessments. The first time I was assessed for ADD was $800 (psychiatrist wasn't definitive about the diagnoses, and so nobody would give me ADD meds and I had to be re-assessed later). The second time I was assessed for ADD was $500. I'm in Canada, though, so it was just the test administration they were charging for, not the office time.

I'm in Canada too, and when I went for an official diagnosis, I didn't have to pay for anything, not even upfront. But on the other hand, I had spent some time in australia, where their health care is more like the US, my mom had shelled out a fair amount to a psychologist and then a psychiatrist; I have no idea how much, but at that point we didn't know about aspergers, though the psychologist was beginning to suspect. so when I went for an official diagnosis in Canada, I had letters from the psychologist and the psychiatrist, and the Canadian psychiatrist read them over before our meeting and it was just a one hour meeting.

But yeah, I think it would definitely take more than one meeting to diagnose aspergers.

I don't think you would need more than one session to test for Aspergers. Definitely not five.

It was one session (a huge honking long session, granted; about eight hours) and it didn't cost me anything but bus fare.

I don't think you could go there, because you're not in the same country I am.

couldn't guarantee that a diagnosis would helpful, as it's not an official disability, etc, that i'd need to depend on the goodwill of my employer. in the context of official state/federal disabilities, something like that.

This is bad information. AS is an "official" disability--well, actually "disability" is defined differently depending on the context, but in an ADA context, which is what gives you workplace accommodations, it is defined as something which creates functional limitations.

I would NOT see this professional based on his misunderstanding of the disability laws.

What you will need for getting official workplace accommodations is a doctor who understands how to communicate disability information in an ADA context. This doctor you are considering clearly is incapable of doing that, and he will probably not be helpful (or it is less likely that he will be helpful).

In the current US situations, evals generally run about $1000 - $1500 and usually take 1 - 5 sessions. It varies with professional, and also with how the ( ... )

Oop, I should have specified: the $1000 - $1500 range is for Dx by a neuropsychiatrist (typically neuropsychs do ASD evals). People with different credentials may charge more or less.

I haven't been diagnosed. But I've given it thought. I'd appreciate a lead to your guy.
